A returning players thoughts on the community

As a returning player, I memory-holed a lot of things so I can get a fresh start with a new toon. I am taking my time to learn DRG properly and not be mislead by false info. I am going slower than normal so I can do my research on my job so when a new skill is unlocked I can figure out where it goes in my rotation. I am relearning slower than normal so I can be an effective player, not just a "look at me" type player. also notice how uneasy people have become when talking to others. This is not how the community use to be. I asked a question bout something to another player and they freaked out when I asked a legit question about how many aetherrite shards are there in Limsa since I didn't know if they increased the amount, or I if saw a cool outfit people are wearing. I see a lot of people walking on eggshells more and not so friendly anymore??? I find it rather unsociable and rather not so friendly like they are looking for an excuse to be angry or offended over something. I kindly asked a person to move away from the retainer bell because they were standing on top of it and I did ask them to kindly move because I could access it. They lose there shyte in public chat saying "stop looking at my backside" (had to edit myself on this one) and tried to get other people to dogpile me while they tried to slink away. mins later a GM asked me what had happened and I told the GM what I said in chat and to check the chat log file as well to verify what I said. I was about to get a temp ban for 2 people who tried to false flag me for no reason... is this is how the community has become? I was legit being respectful to others, I just don't get the logic in the behavior...makes me want to ask for a refund and not play anymore...

Lmao that is pretty funny. And I think you got it wrong here. Just because you had a bad run in does not mean that is the normal. You just got unlucky.

Also, the people who false reported you. If the gms do their job. The people who reported you should get in trouble for doing it.


Also your memory on how the community use to be, eh always been bad apples in this game. But now people can easily get in trouble for being annoying. The people who get upset so easily, I find it amusing myself, because they are rare encounter that I just enjoy, but I have a sadist nature.


My point is, if you are willing to let a few bad encounters jade your views on community. That is fine. This is a mmorpg and the bad apples are part of that world. Just like real life. Things should not always be sunshine and rainbows.

You are always going to have a few bad people in the game. Don't let that discourage you. Most people are relatively helpful. As for the reports you got. I am sure the person got a friend to report you. Not really sure as to why but he did what he did. If I see someone standing on a retainer bell... I just go to the next one. Some people don't honestly intend to do it but there are some that do. Just like you will find the person on the biggest mount they have to stand on a quest npc. But the community as a whole is still probably one of the best MMO communities.

I started FF14 in 2019 did a break for years and went on game since 4 months ago with a good game time. Just to said: I've encountered only 4 bad peoples so far in 2019 and no one in 2021.
One in PvP because we lost, and he started insulting players.
And the 3 others were in dungeons: one because of lack of DPS (he clearly targeted someone and said "your dps is shit", so we reported him and I think he got a ban). Other because I was new, and the last one because other players were new.

And so far in 2021, no bad encounters for me. So don't be discouraged !

First of all: No one is obilgated to talk to you. We also had a lot of scam-tells in the past few months, so yeah, getting a random /tell from a stranger might not be totally welcome.

Going through your situations one by one, while hopefully answering them...

1) According to my google search, there should be 7 shards in Limsa. Google will always be your friend!

2) If you want to know what gear pieces someone is using as glamour: Examine their character, bring up the screen where you can see their gear and hover over the item-slot you're intrested in. That will bring up the name of the item used as glamour (if one was used as glamour).

3) There is a button you can hit to target the nearest object or NPC, ignoring other players. It should be the X-button on the PS4 controller or the "0" on the numpad on keyboards - at least those are the default settings. (There is also usually more than on summoning bell around, so just walking down the street would have brought you to a "free" bell).

You're going to run across oddities no matter where you go in life, in game or out. What you need to do is learn to be smarter, or you can always use the petty approach that some use and report them first, I prefer the former. In game, do the following:

Escape button > Keybind > Targeting > Target Nearest NPC or Object

At that point, see if you can click on the NPC or Object, if not, right click on the Target Bar bar and select Focus Target from the drop down menu, you need to have Focus Target Bar from your UI enabled for this to work. The Focus Target window will appear, you now have access to the NPC or object. This method is tedious but effective. Or pressing the '0' button twice works for a little more ease.

I've literally never seen anyone just randomly go after someone for '' looking at their character ''.
I've had one or two creeps before tho making sexual comments towards me just completely out of nowhere and yeah it's really gross.
For the same reason that it's gross to make sexual comments towards women randomly irl, no sane woman is going to lose their mind because you glanced in their direction.
But if someone is just starring at them and making it really obvious or make unwanted sexual comments towards them they will.

It's possible that it was just some crazy person, but that specific reaction begs the question a little.

some people do it because they've come from bad, dismissive communities and are surprised that the majority of the XIV community isn't immediately hostile, others virtue signal on how zomg awesome and nice the community they're part of is and how other communities and the players in it are so much worse
and on the other hand, others do it because they come from a normal community with good and bad parts (like every community ever) and expect the XIV one to be the next best thing after sliced bread and are genuinely let down because it's "just" normal and not how the cult that loves to idolize it said it is, not to mention possibly just being plain unlucky with running into bad people

since it's not directly related to the topic, but similar posts to one in this thread get posted a few times in threads like this, I'll put it in a spoiler because I found it interesting

that being said, and I don't mean the poster in this thread did this and am just speaking generally, but I do think it's funny how these topics always get posts that say "don't generalise a whole community because of a few bad experiences" when this forum absolutely loves to do this when it comes to WoW and circlejerk about how much better we are than players from there and seemingly don't have issues generalising others, but get upset when others do it to "us"
