If you want a house right now, yes, you do have to sit at the placard for hours. There is no alternative. You can stop this madness yourself at any point by not sitting at the placard for hours - no one is putting a gun to your head to do so, you're free not to do it.
Given all their announcments its clear that they're aware of the problems the current housing situation has and they're implementing some "fixes", including a lottery system - maybe not the fixes people want to see, but the fixes they seem to consider their best options within the current system.
I hear ya and we Americans don't like to be "forced" into anything lol.

If you time it right, you can be unsubbed more of the year than you are subbed and still retain your house.
30 days subbed, 40-44 days unsubbed, repeat. If you get lucky and there's a free login campaign that starts the last 10 days of your unsub period, you can skip a subbed period.
I still don't get why people find it so important to own a house in this game when they don't have much interest in playing the game more than a couple of months each year. There are other games with much better housing.
Protest what?
They've already announced a new lotto system for some housing wards in 6.1.
They're changing it, hold your horses.
And DLC? Don't give an expansion disservice, it's a bit more substantial than what's typically called DLC.

I'd enjoy a 3-4 month break and then return when I felt like it. Right now, I had my chars maxed in everything including armor of my choosing a couple months ago The new stuff doesn't begin for several months and I'd like to focus on other things including knee surgery, without worrying that my house, furnishings, (which I have worked hard for), will still be there while jockeying to take time away. The last thing I want is to get involved in another MMO when I do enjoy this one off and on and cannot devote the time to it now. I think time away off and on might make the play even more fun with less repetition and I intend to make this my last MMO after playing them for 24+ yearsIf you time it right, you can be unsubbed more of the year than you are subbed and still retain your house.

Cause..
1. I worked my kitty butt off to get enough gil to buy my Large years back
2. I'm FC lead in my fc so if I go my hard work to get us a nice fc house and the fc structure i worked hard to maintain would fall into someone else that I don't want.
Soooo i'm kinda "forced" to re-sub but as I mentioned in my post before you must've seen since you're quoting me that even though I'm "forced" I still enjoy the game, just don't like the idea of me having to cause risk of losing what i worked years to get.

If you're worried about your FC and your leader status within that, its not the auto-demolition thats "forcing" you to stay subbed. The passing on of the leader status (after 35 days iof the leader not logging in) has been active before the auto-demolition even was a thing. So if you dont want to lose your FC, you have to stay subbed (and log in) within even shorter intervals than the housing timer would allow. (personal sidenote: as a member I would also be a bit irritated if the leader only showed their face once every 35 days to keep their title and didnt really engage with the FC, so I'd probably leave the FC).Cause..

In regards to the FC-house: as a reminder, every member of the FC can reset the timer. So as long as you're not in a one-man FC or one thats basically dead, there is probably no need to worry about an FC-house.
While the auto-demolition is unfortunate, it only really effects your personal house - but since you need to stay active to keep your FC before the demolition timer even kicks in, its not really the house that "forces" you to stay subbed.
Even if there was no auto-demolition and actually even if there was no leader-demotion, you'd still lose what you built if you unsubbed for long periods of time - and if only because I doubt that your FC would stay in a frozen state of nothing changing and that people would still behave the same way (or even stay in the FC) if you were gone for long periods of time...
The system is changing in 6.1. It is going to a lotto system essentially. You put the money in and if you get it you get it. But you won't have to wait at the placcard anymore. You will either get your deposit back... Or you will own a new home =D! I have never taken the time to try and buy a home. I want one though so now that it is going to be this system I may start putting money down to see if I can get a mid sized.
The best solution is to add a small fee as an optional sub. The reason why this system has an issue is because of server limitations. Maybe basic it can go for free but you can have only one per account and if you want to have bigger then it must be a small fee per month which goes to keep up server cost.
The most important thing is that all players should be able to have housing otherwise it should be removed. Is no point in advising when you buy a game about the housing system or it must be more clear about getting a housing system before you buy the game.
I'm sorry but that would alienate so many players who wouldn't be able to afford a premium subscription for something that should be free and available for everyone.
While I agree the main issue is server costs and memory I don't think enable a premium subscription aimed at people who can afford it is the 'best solution'. Best I would say it a overhaul of the poorly designed system.
