Like a mini Legend of Zelda vibe where you have to fight a dark wizard that just happens to be weak to light.

Pre Stormblood Samurai story was pretty good. Not as good as DRK, but it tugs at the feels a little bit.
I found SB to be an alright gladiator story but a poor paladin story. It didn't help that the tournament really didn't even have any stakes, not even an actual reward story wise, though gameplay wise of course you get something.

If we ever get full on job stories for old jobs again I hope we get to go on an adventure doing knight errant stuff helping people instead of dealing with the Ul'dah paladins or gladiator drama.

The Storyline pre-50 was written, as were all the base ARR jobs, with a bit less panache than later quests, writing against a deadline for a game that many thought was already dead, had something to do with it as well.

The reason Dark Knight and Machinist, for example, have what appear to be better storylines is that they had two years to put them together after the release of ARR. The storylines for jobs became much more straightforward in each subsequent expansion.

I wonder at times if the reasoning behind the Role quests in ShB (and, soon, in EW) is because it was really getting difficult to fit so many different storylines into each expansion and still keep them interesting. One can put way more effort into four storylines over a two year period than 18 of them.
The original jobs we get during FF14 ARR were mostly just the original 1.0 job stories they carried over into FF14 ARR so the lack of flavor players feel is mostly due to being made during 1.0 era and just slapped on with a new coat of paint due to the changes to the locations from FF14 1.0 to FF14 ARR. Only Summoner and Scholar job story during 2.0 era were created for FF14 ARR.
