Will We Ever Be Able To Fly Without A Mount

I've just been thinking, wouldn't it pretty epic if we could fly without a mount.
I don't much about the lore implications of this, but is there a lore friendly method that Could work.

maybe this could work
we have things like angel wings, but what if maybe they where more then an accessory, maybe a range of different types of wings you can equip in a similar way to selecting a mount.

Well what do you think, do you have any other ideas and suggestions that might make this work.

Sucks that racial abilities aren't a thing in FFXIV. Being able to fly around on a timer would be pretty unique, or even being able to glide like a Demon Hunter from WoW.

Feels like there's a drought of games starring winged characters... Honestly they wouldn't even have to massively change any of the systems to accommodate such a race, could make their sprint animation be low altitude flight and apply the same restrictions as with mounts (story progression/aether currents) otherwise

Except you know, all the other things that are preventing new races. The last new races they implemented still can't wear all the gear available and literally had to have the opposite sex be made at a later date. It is not a simple thing.

Well, a certain villain was shown to be capable of flight without wings a couple patches ago. Whatever mechanism he's using, we should be able to use. I mean, technically, due to the way aether currents seem to work for any mount now... it should work just fine for a person.

Of course, if it's slower than mounts, why bother? If it's as fast as mounts... what's the point of mounts? When would the story impart it onto us, such that said villain's scene still retains its specialness?

Lore wise weirdly XIV implies pretty heavily that flight is not a mechanical function but a magical one for many creatures, and that doing so safely requires understanding an area to a certain degree.

So it isn't actually that wild for the PC to just learn to fly in the same way we sorta just got the ability to breath under water.

The bigger issue is genre, which in a lot of ways trumps lore and theme. It doesn't really matter if something is hypothetically possible if it doesn't fit the genre, and in fantasy its sorta weird for your characters to fly around like superheroes unaided, compared to riding a mount or a broom or whatever.

Its the same reason that Star Wars didn't devolve into different sides using Von Neuman Probes to murder each other and convert entire star systems into mega-structure factories: sure the fact automated droid production combined with the fact that droids themselves could be technicians and producers and spaceships makes this a logical inevitability, but then you are less talking Lucas and more talking speculative hard scifi and moved into a different genre entirely.

I really enjoyed the elves in perfect world for their wings when I was younger, but venomancer was always my main cause turning into a fox was fun plus the joy of having pets to fight for you. That game was so p2w though.. shame! I wouldn't be against the idea but I am not sure it would fit well in the game overall.. it might make mounts a bit defunct feeling.

Personally would prefer not, it always ends up looking super tacky imo, but that's me.
