Back during ARR and heavenward days. The rules was not really enforced as well as it is now. So the community was iffy. Wife had to deal with linkshell that stalked her, and GMS was about as useful as Blizzard ones. Stormblood is when they turn things around and became super heavily enforced rules to the point that these types of people are scared to even speak. Leading to a better community.

The rule changes spooked a lot of people, including myself. But honestly, nothing really changed for the worse. I talk to and joke around with other people just like I did before. "Don't be a jerk" is a pretty easy rule to follow.

It was not just the rules that changed, but how it was enforced as well. I had a long talked with GMS at the time, and when they looked at the logs and saw the bs she went through, and myself. They just gave me a warning for lashing out like I did, but was pretty understanding I was being put through a ton of stress. (i was younger pretty angry at the support.). It took awhile, but they clean things up for sure. Not sure if they changed systems up on how reports are done or what. Just glad they did.

Hi, been around about 2 months. Anyone who doesn't see how amazing this community is has never experienced the worst the Internet has to offer, or even the average of it. FFXIV has the most amazing community I have ever experienced in any online game, period. And also one of the most amazing online communities, just in general.

Even if it's "fake" in a way, because it is so heavily enforced, I am okay with that. It sucks that some people have to be forced to not be toxic, but if people were all good by nature and just did the right thing always, then we wouldn't even need laws, would we?

My only real issue with people in the game I've noticed somewhat regularly is how extremely unreceptive people are to advice, sometimes they even get aggressive or other people get angry on their behalf because someone dared to try and help.
It doesn't matter how much I go out of my way to sound as nice as possible it's almost always met with either being ignored or someone getting mad.
And I've definitely noticed it getting a bit worse recently.

People trying to help you is not a personal attack.
And if someone is standing in front of the boss and keeps getting killed by the tank buster someone explaining it to them is not harassment or shaming...
Some people are definitely way too touchy to the point that even just offering advice is seen as '' telling people how to play '' in a toxic sense.
And I mean if someone at level 80 is playing SAM and is standing in front of the boss dying repeatedly and not doing any of their positionals then I think you're the bad person for not helping them, but it's treated like the opposite.

I dunno why it's really bizarre but this is like when the toxicity comes out in my experience, everyone's all nice but the moment you try and help and it has anything to do with anything gameplay related people flip out.

Eh, that has always been a thing to varying degrees. It's not something I see regularly, but it happens.

This is the side effect unfortunately of having such a strictly ruled game. People get softer skin and can’t take any form of criticism. You see it all the time in this community whether it be criticism towards another person or criticism about the game.

Generally, it's a decent community. I think because most people usually keep to themselves or with their friend group. Most other MMOs people are much more willing to socialize with randoms and are willing to learn and give and take criticism because they want to be the best at what they want to do. In FFXIV, its more common that players have extremely defensive personalities to the point of "its my way or the highway" attitude. You are walking on eggshells when deciding if you should offer advice/criticism in FFXIV.
