I know it does 50 more potency than engagement, but I seem to always fail SSS runs when I'm using displacement as compared to mixing corps and engagement inbetween the melee combo. Is it due to the animation lock of engagement maybe?

I always use Engagement weaved into my melee combo. You get instant casts while using Verholy/Verflare and Scorch, you can manually move to position yourself to where you need to be. I don't know if it's a huge DPS loss, but the level of control it lets me have over where I am in the field is worth it to me.
It becomes a dps loss if you have to delay using the cooldown to be able to use it and end up not doing the full four *ments between manafications. This can be the result of being unable to displacement because you're in melee, because of fight mechanics/arena design, or because of doubleweaving. However this won't be the reason you're scuffing SSS, if you're scuffing SSS you have bigger fish to fry.
RDM itself is a DPS loss.
