Ok, so you've participated in over 1000 dungeons, raids, or trials, receive 1500 player commendations and finished the level 80 role quest for your chosen job (which is not Miner). Congratulations! You know more about the game from a dungeon/raid/trial level than that new sprout with 10 hours of gameplay! You qualify as a Mentor for DoW/DoM battle jobs. There are a few more of those on your server than just you, so if you don't know something, some other Mentor on the Novice Network will.

The only questions you need to ask at this point are "Do I want to be a mentor?", "Can I keep myself from giving out incorrect information to sprouts about the things I don't know (maps/fashion)", "Is this additional chat channel going to cut into my time chatting as a member of an FC?", "Do I want people to assume I'm obnoxious due to prior experiences with other Mentors". "Do I want to help other players in this fashion?" And, the most important one, "Is it really worth my time to be a mentor"?

Good luck in your evaluation. Remember, 5 months playing can be an eternity in MMO years.

Commendation rewards for 3000+ instances are commensurate with other rewards for doing X. They also have caps.

The chocobo companion system was a huge gil sink, and your companion is now maxed out at rank 20 as far as "things it can do and damage it can take". At over 150k per Thavnarian Onion, it became super-expensive to level your companion between 10 and 20.

I highly suspect that job-based hunting logs were replaced in ARR by daily Hunts (since there was a 2 year span where you couldn't hunt anything else for your job). Since these rewarded far more in 'tokens' to purchase gear, etc. the hunting logs became obsolete. Why do them when a simple trip to the MSQ Roulette will net you more XP for less time?

They discontinued adding more Veterans rewards 4 years ago. You actually don't have to be subscribed for as long to get the gear rewards. The other rewards (mounts, minions) are available using Achievement vouchers, and those vouchers buy everything available in a short period of being online. SE no longer needs to encourage us to continue playing their game by invoking some kind of loyalty program.

One might as well ask "Why don't they continue to develop Eureka in 2021?".

This is my issue with requests to up the limit to qualify. It has zero impact on the reasons players are acquiring the crown, it just means people who play the longest get it. I also wish if there were one single change to the mentor system, it would be removing the mount from mentor roulette. There should not be an incentive to Qing up to help sprouts. I have very good friends in this game but holy shit, the amount of vitriol I always hear coming out of their mouths regarding sprout's skills is maddening. I feel like the drive to get the mount makes people so toxic when all they want is the clears for achievement progress, I don't even know if the sprouts are leaving these duties better off.

6k commendations in 6 years? Laughs in 4k in one year.

Honestly, OP, you sound both incredibly entitled and undeserving of the mentor crown. If we want to really talk about increasing mentorship requirements how about needing x amount of completed mentor roulettes per week? How about actually having mentor roulette requirements unlocked, hm? Probably not a fan of that, but you don't seem to be the type to be in the program for helping people anyway so.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And besides, commendations aren't tied to being a mentor. They're visual headpats on your character's sheet.

You're not doing much here by throwing your own commendations in their face, just saying. Yeah they phrased it poorly, you're also not helping anything either by acting the way you are about it too.

As has been recommended multiple times by multiple people:

Turn the crown into a watering can (watering can growing sprouts ha ha). See if mentors drop or behavior changes.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

To be totally honest, it baffles me that people would become mentors just for an insignificant icon. When I saw Zepla's video about this all those years ago, I never thought this was actually something happening--I thought it was just a joke. This said, sometimes I wonder if maybe people are not necessarily after the crown itself but rather because they somehow think being a mentor means that you're better at the game than everyone else, which is of course not true. In this case, I fear that no matter what the icon is changed to (even a simple M), it wouldn't solve the problem.

It doesn’t matter what the icon is. It’s the designation of mentor (read “teacher”) that people are after.

Even if they did away with the entire mentor program players with a bad attitude will still be around, and people will move on to something else to hate on.

Of course there are going to be bad mentors around, it’s a free system designed for people to volunteer helping others. That means since those people aren’t getting paid to do this they will only help when they are in the mood to.

I think the effect all these mentor hate threads are having is actually quite the opposite of what people want. Because all the sensitive people who care about others see them and don’t want to help anymore.

I get people want systems to be perfect, and for there never ever to be any negative experiences or situations where things go wrong or people are toxic but that’s never going to happen. And I think if you were to grab an excel sheet and spend an entire week in a novice network and start tallying up how many people ask questions and get help versus how many times a bad mentor ruins things you will come out with a different impression of the system.

I'm more saying that it's a headpat system and nothing to do with being a great player. People will throw comms at people just because they like their name. OP's argument is that he has so many commendations that he should receive special privileges, like super mentor(?). It's like getting reddit gold or likes on your twitter post, and should have no baring on any reward system. Tying mounts and glam to 3k commendations was already too much.
