My friends really enjoy FFXIV, and I am convinced it has a compelling and engaging end game content; so me and my wife bought copies and started playing.

I am only 40 hours in, but I'm going to be going now. The most fun I've had was at character creation, and I thought I'd try to constructively explain the problem. I hope it can, perhaps, be fixed in the future.

Some players are here for the RPG, the story, and I assume that the main story line is great for them in that regard. I really came here for the MMO, to do something kind of difficult with friends and to have some laughs while in chat talking about it.

This game really makes you do an awful lot of RPG to get there, and in a style that just isn't for everyone.. A painful amount. I'm not saying stop having a slow skill progression and learning curve, I started MMOs when I was 12 and I think that stuff would have been great for me back then.

I'm saying give a skip option in game that doesn't cost $25.
Let us skip straight to doing difficult light party dungeons and progressing that way. The ones you give us to progress with are very easy.
Just ... let us play a game with our friends ya know?

Anyways best of luck to you, maybe I'll get lonely and throw $25 your way to fast forwards and come back... but probably not.

You can play a game with friends from the earliest levels, it's just not necessarily a difficult early game because not everyone is looking for the challenge you are. You can do Palace of the Dead from level 17. It's up to 4-person content that goes up to floor 200 and floor 101-200 is the challenging version, which even full parties sometimes cannot do.

There is actually end-game content at quest intervals of level 50, 60, 70 and 80 which represent the maximum levels of each expansion. For the older content to be challenge you need to open Duty Finder and select "Minimum IL" and "Silence Echo". The challenging versions are known as Extreme, Minstrel's Ballad, Savage or the coil raids.

You can boost to the level 50 quests a lot cheaper for just $8 with Tales of Adventure: A Realm Reborn.

I’m leveling up in an mmo and RPG thing. FF14 is often referred to as an RPGMMO.

That said, wow makes you level up when you’re brand new to the game or buy a boost for like $60 or some such.

Other games have a leveling component too.

That said, FF is a slog until (I’m told) about level 50ish.

Good luck in your quest for an MMO that you enjoy, there are plenty to choose from.

You can skip all the way to the end, you still won't find difficult light party dungeons in progression.
And even then you're not making progress "with friends" because you primarily team up for duties but 99% of the time you're doing story quests alone.
It sounds like you want an experience out of this game (challenging multiplayer campaign) that it's not trying to provide.

Well it sounds like the game doesn't really offer what you are looking for. There isn't really any "difficult light party dungeons" outside the later parts of the two deep dungeons. Hardcore content is mainly limited to 8 person content at endgame. And about 80% of the game at least is solo content, particularly the MSQ. The game is a Final Fantasy first, MMO second, so the main story takes up a large chunk of the content. And outside dungeons and trials it is not multiplayer.
