The icon wasn't too great to begin with but the reasoning is rather silly. May as well remove all bladed objects, or icons thereof, because of aichmophobia (=fear of sharp objects) while we're at it... don't get ideas now!

When the game's story becomes self-aware:
To me it just doesn't tell me '' Sage '' at all.
It's definitely not alone in not really telling you what the Job is just on looks alone, but still.
It could've used the weapons as part of its design like Reaper.
Reaper is very clear what it is when you look at it.
Yeah, I've seen this before and it's all I can see every time I see it now.
Like I said, I don't hate the designs but I don't particularly like them either.
I don't envy them though, it must get difficult trying to design something that encapsulates the jobs in a single icon.
Anatidaephobia, trichophobia, Arachnophobia.
As you said by trying to please everyone you will please no one and the game would result in a blank page. Not white because it would trigger someone. Just an empty page.
If SQEX changed the icon, it's probably because there was a strong response rather than "someone is afraid of X, we must remove X"
I'm sorry what? How about we remove everything that people have a "phobia" for? Then we won't have a game. When I was shared this I was in utter disbelief. I don't have any particular feelings about it being changed, but it being changed due to... this? The original didn't trigger any trypophobia in me, but if it was doing in others then I don't mind the change. I don't have particularly strong feelings about either the old or the new design.
Fun fact, trypophobia isn't universally recognized as a phobia because it elicits a disgust response rather than a fear response, and as a result doesn't tend to impair judgement in the same way that being terrified generally would.

This sets a dangerous precedent. Coral clusters are present in-game and have many clusters of tiny holes. Will they be removed from the game? If so, why? If not, why?
Perhaps this is yet another example as to why our community representatives need to be present and active on this forum. We really need to know what feedback, exactly, they are passing along to the development team. I didn't see a single comment about people being 'scared' of the Sage icon and I'm pretty active across a number of sites related to discussion of FFXIV.
Some people have a phobia of deep water. Will swimming be removed from the game?
Some people have a phobia of spiders. Will spider enemies be removed from the game?
Some people have a phobia of heights. Will flying and tall structures be removed from the game?
I hope not and I doubt that they will in any of those cases - which makes the reasoning behind the icon's change utterly and totally bizarre.
Imo, changing a job icon cause of a phobia is no problem to me, it has no effect on the actual gameplay.
They could've just not mentioned it, and nobody would complain about phobia being an issue, since it really has no effect on anything.
I hadn't seen it either, but it's from the JP General Discussion apparently.

Between holes and Teletubbies, I know which is more frightening...![]()
