Of course people care what other people do, you're lying to yourself if you think otherwise. This is why people buy clears in the first place. This is why shiny rewards for countless hours of work exist. This is why rare mounts are popular. People just like showing off. And other people see the shiny things that the first person has, admire those things and care enough to actually want to go out and do the same. It's one of many reasons MMO's are popular, it's normal human behavior.
Being able to purchase a clear devalues the accomplishment.

But to look at it another way, why should carry runs be allowed? How does it enhance the gameplay? Would it really be a big loss if you couldn't buy Ultimate raid clears with crafter gil?

Society puts way too much value on what people possess over what they do. That's why so many are more interested in going the easy route and buying things to impress others than putting in fair effort to earn those things on their own.

And let's face it - it gives those who are capable an easy source of income as they sell carries to those who aren't capable. That's pretty much a foundation of economic systems - those who can do something selling their goods and services to those who can't or don't want to take the time to do it.

Selling carries isn't going to go away. All you can do is decide to take more interest in what you witness people doing than what they have.

It only devalues it if you're doing it to impress others over doing it for personal satisfaction at beating a challenge through your own effort. Things I've achieved in game still mean something to me because I know the effort I put in even if others have achieved those things through carries/botting/etc.

Is it a bit annoying to be accused of botting myself because I fairly earned an achievement title associated with botting (Saint of the Firmament)? Sure, but I wasn't doing it to impress others. I went after the title to satisfy myself I could fairly earn it through my own effort.

If someone wants to jump to the conclusion I must have botted to get it, that's their problem. I know the truth so I could care less what they think as long as they don't start harassing me with false accusations.

So judge them by what they do. If you're in any sort of combat content with them, you can get a general idea of how skilled they are. Those who bought their carries will stick out like a sore thumb.

I agree only one person can lessen the value of your own achievements and that's you

Note: Taking advice from a players alt, is like taking advice from a voice in a dark room. Criticism is a two way street remember that!!
