Link to Laptop in OP's Post

EDIT: I think that would be sufficient to at least run it at 1080p on standard settings. That's a pretty beastly laptop.

I typically find that customize-to-order laptops tend to be less expensive for what you get. Obviously not always the case, but every time I've look at laptops it's been true.

What are you roughly looking to spend?

If it makes you feel any better, I've been paying on an ASUS gaming laptop full-time since CE release...I have yet to have any major issues other than I wore out the tray fan it is ALWAYS resting on. Again, this wasn't any part of the computer, just the extra tray fan I keep the computer on to keep it cool.) I know 'desktops' are best..but I needed something compact, and efficient. I play more or less on the highest settings (I had to scale down the size a bit, but that was so i could play in windowed mode NOT because the game didn't work well full bore). And I'm playing on an Gamer ASUS laptop that was in your pricepoint, but is now almost 2 years old. Also, supposedly, 2.0 specs are to be 'gentler' on computers so that should help. Basically, as long as you keep it clean, and cool, and make sure you pack it well for traveling you should be good to go.

Make sure you buy a good cooling fan to set this laptop on. I use a targus one that has 2 fans and can be either run via a USB port on your computer or plugged into an outlet directly. The computer does have some hefty ventilation, but it can't keep up with the cooling demands on it's own when you are in heavy load zones/primals etc. With the additional coolingpad/fan, I don't have overheating issues.

One other thing: I have noticed when I try to play in some hotels/ away from home the internet lags way more than if I am at home. So usually I only log in to harvest/farm/craft if I'm not logging in from a fast, reliable connection. But again, it's the connection itself that screws me over when traveling, not the laptop.

Well depends. The one you are looking at may be better but my concern from reading on the XIV forums is, the new GPUs from Nvidia, 600 series such as the one in the Asus, have been not running the game well or crashing; most likely a driver issue that has yet to be resolved. I too run an older Asus so I can vouch for the brand it's great for XIV. Also, you're looking to purchase an Asus ROG laptop so this new one you like, the one Kinsey has and mine are all Asus. Just be careful about needing to possibly return it if the game crashed due to the drivers of the GPU. Otherwise, solid machine.

Edit: Btw, not knocking Nvidia. It's what I have on my Desktop and my LT so.

I basically have the same ASUS laptop that you are looking at with 2 exceptions:
    1. Mine is almost 2 years older than yours so while it specs are more or less the same, yours are slightly, better. So in this regard, if I can run the game just fine, you should be fine too.
    2. I have a ATI Mobility Radeon 5870 Graphics Card, which is different brand than Nvidia. As I am not a computer expert, I can't tell you which is better. But my Graphics Card has been fine thus far when it comes to running the game.

If you still are wary, which is understandable because you are buying a computer online that needs to do some pretty hardcore processing without being able to see if it can handle it, maybe don't buy your computer online but instead go to a real, physical store. I got my laptop at Best Buy. They have been more than awesome with not only setting me up with a laptop that would most def. run FFXIV (back in 9/2010), but any question I've ever had or small issue, they have helped me out with and not made me feel like a noob. Even though I totally am. So if you have any concerns at all, I'd suggest going to an actual store and buying a laptop there (take in your game box because that can help them guide you as well). Any computer store, I just happened to shop at Best Buy, but any computer store would work.

Yeah hotel internet is so slowww. So yeah, be prepared for that for sure. I would suggest building a gaming laptop from cyberpowerpc or iBuyPower. If you must play on a laptop, then you should always explore your options. I for one hate gaming on laptops after building my desktop. Best of luck to you.
