I kinda agree with them though, there are items that aren't necessarily gendered, but are still genderlocked because they're part of a set - Ryne's boots and Y'shtola's feather thingies as the most recent examples.

Thinking about how the outfits in the OP are already in the game files makes me think they'll be another set to slip in when content it light. Like it or not, textures that already exist in game make porting to a new model much easier than creating a whole new one from scratch. Just like we have seen the pattern of dungeon gear being put in undyable only to reappear as dyable in the next expansion. Everyone remember "They can't make that gear dyable!! Think of the workload"?

(Wishful thinking)They could always sell the mog station sets as individual pieces as well. The pieces that don’t necessarily make much sense being gender locked would not have to be gender locked(gloves, shoes)

Or stick to selling whole sets but just make the boots and gloves unisex, like the Expeditioner sets originally had those pieces unisex even though the tops and pants(es?) were gendered.

They already essentially have that approach with the Aymeric costume where the hairstyle is unisex even though the outfit isn't.

And in practice it's there for things like the Mheg Deaca where people might not touch the fairy gown with a barge pole but they want the circlet and boots. Or really, any time anyone buys a whole outfit just for one piece.

And that is why people with a mind for historical clothing see a lot less imbalance to feminine outfits here...

Another one that jumps to mind is Lyse's set – unique gloves, sabatons that exist as a player model already and, particularly, unique earrings that would need no adaptation work.

Also the ARR Scion sets which again all exist as player models. They're not really exciting outfits overall, of course, but would give a few currently role-locked pieces to use for all classes – getting the caligae models to equip on mages, for example.

Such attire isn't really the equivalent of a dress nor was it treated as such during the time period - and there was very much distinct differences in how men and women chose to dress back then...to say nothing of the fact that such attire was largely worn solely by those of 'importance' such as the nobility and wealthy by virtue of the materials and dyes being extremely expensive/rare.

We're not exactly starved for fancy looking tunics and breeches in FFXIV, either - my current forum signature is proof enough of that.

I gave the solution though; alt of the opposite gender.
Thing is, the FFXIV devs keep telling us they have to cut things in order to do anything. The fact that we're only getting male viera first and female hrothgar who knows when speaks to this. We don't have time to be telling them we want boots a female npc uses. We don't get to pick and choose what gear pieces we want them to make for the opposite gender.

As a professional company they would have to recreate the entire Ryne glam for male characters.

Just let people wear whatever they want, even if its an attire traditionally meant to be worn by the opposite gender of the character they're playing.

It shouldn't be a big deal, especially if the concerns are "they will look weird"--hell, people are already running around with frog, chocobo, and chicken costumes after all.

Technically this would be the responsibility of the Mog Station team as they are separate and theoretically wouldn't affect the actual dev teams progress.

Many people think one not gender locked attire is less work. It's the same. BUT for people who don't want some kind of crossdressing, it means they have to build an alternative design, then it's twice of work.

Now, for Ryne dress, it's twice more work since it's a woman body based shape they have to adapt to the different male body shapes. The reason is topology, skeletons and shape keys are not the same for both genders. Copy past is not really the best idea when you work with two topologies.

From what I know they have 19 models (NPC and playable characters), 15 for playable characters. It means for one unisex top, they have to be sure it works on 15 body shapes.
