There is a way that they win and that is by examining the actual numbers of people demanding this and, consequently, the minimal reputational impact of not satisfying it. Loud mouths on Twitter do not a substantial proportion of the playerbase make.Haha Grizzlytank thinks the game actually has an engine that stretches the hyur midlander body to fit every race (except Roegadyn)? If that was the case making male viera and female hrothgar would be easy as hell.
Instead what we got from Yoship is how they had to go through thousands of gear pieces and fit them manually to the race's specifications.
Furthermore, with the never-ending gender denominations/RP denominations how can they satisfy this crowd?
If it's not male characters wanting to dress like women it's people like Grizzly tank asking them to make whatever fits on men to look exactly the same way on female characters.
In this neverending identity world there's no way the devs win. They would only win if they stressed themselves out to make the same glam a hundred times to satisfy:
1. Male looking version of glam example 1
2. Female looking version of glam example 1
3. Male looking version of glam example 1 for female characters
4. Female looking version of glam example 1 for male characters
That would be the only scenario where the men wanting to look like women and the women wanting to look like men would satisfy all the possible scenarios. That's essentially doubling their workload.

When the game's story becomes self-aware:
I’ve never played a female character so i can’t speak on that too much but, just from this thread alone it seems like even people who play female characters are tired of all the sexy/revealing outfits as that seems to be all they get? As for the male thing though, i guess there’s a difference between what looks “cool” and what’s inherently masculine. I guess it’s down to partially subjective tastes as well. 100% though healers and casters rarely ever have masculine gear if at all.Apparently not if you think this game is lacking masculine gear. I'm playing a male character and like cool looking outfits and have a huge amount of outfits to choose from
My girlfriend on the other hand likes to dress her character in sexy/more revealing outfits and the poor choice she has in this regard is her second biggest complain about this game.
In the end removing all genderlocks will lead to one unisex outfit und everybody knows that outfit will be just the originally planned male version available for female characters.

I know I personally find it tedious on my lady cats. It's always some exposed thigh variant, and even when I was younger I didn't do that. I don't object to "feminine" clothing in the slightest, but feminine does not always equal bare thighs or skimpy underwear as outerwear. There's much more to femininity than that. However, I'm not ever after removing that from the people who do like it (and I do buy it when people say they don't have enough of those options, as they're looking at it from a different place than I do). Just wish I could have the stuff I'd prefer. I don't feel completely badly done to, however, I usually find enough to make things work. I largely suspect we're all in the same boat, just different cabins.I’ve never played a female character so i can’t speak on that too much but, just from this thread alone it seems like even people who play female characters are tired of all the sexy/revealing outfits as that seems to be all they get? And whilst I can imagine my concept of masculine gear for my chaps is likely different to, say yours or Theodric's, I absolutely understand the request to want things considerably less frilly - I certainly wish the female gear was less frilly and childish, short shorts or skirts, and my main catguy wouldn't wear bows or frills, shorts or skirts either - unless Fashion Report demands it, of course. Though like I said, I usually find enough to make things work. I don't think anything should be genderlocked in theory, however. I just want a good range for everyone - whilst at the same time knowing it's not entirely practical, and that sort of feels a bit meh.

For casters it's not so pronounced provided that it's their own AF. RDM sets mostly focus on elegance, BLM's are the typical FF archetypes (dark and edgy or Vivi, for example), and SMNs are all over the place. Plus for these sets, they do differentiate between genders.
It's where they get re-coloured versions of the healer ones that they end up sometimes with feminine outfits - not so much a problem when it's traditional robes or tunics, and luckily we didn't share gear for the first set of floors for Eden this time... poor SAM and MNK did.
Although with the Cryptlurker set I do wish we had gotten a re-coloured version, because I liked the hood on it better than the mask casters get.
When the game's story becomes self-aware:
Yeah they’ve gone on to use twitter and reddit, the two most toxic cesspools of social media, to gauge community interests and use them for story advice. It’s why i’m not looking forward to future additions lmao.Hn they've given up on the forums. The dev tracker doesn't even show up on the side anymore for my forum view... not to mention actually going to the dev tracker page
https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...rchid=99435249
All you see is mostly German Japanese and some French responses... the English ones just don't give a damn anymore and that's kinda making me mad even as a 1.0 legacy player (granted the general forums are sometimes a cesspool but come on they could answer or delete threads more)

Lol and I had great deletion timing ill just copy and repost

Anyway yeah I remember (back in my day sunny) them young whippersnappers know as devs would respond. *rocks in her rocking chair knitting* what were there names again... Ah Fernewalls, Bayonne, Cayamat (sp?) Then there was that sweet lass Rukiiri who left for another job....
Sorry had an old person moment

Trololo
None of them would dare wear a kilt IRL but are loud on the forum.
It would matter if jean's-sketchers wasn't the average unisex uniform IRL (more or less "rave party vs city slim vs sportwears as some kind of originality. Super.).

La normalité n'est que la moyenne de nos folies individuelles.
Normality is just an average. I'm the weird, you're the bizarre.

I don’t necessarily want Ryne’s dress, bit too plain for my tastes, but I would love her shoes for my male character. Like LOVE them.
And there's the problem, you're gonna double the dev's development cycle with this kind of request. When you want Ryne's shoes, the other side that wants women to use men's clothes will want Thancred's boots.
The solution they will/probably/should give to this request is to make an alt of the opposite gender when the need arises.
There are many times I want to play as a lalafel, so I then go ahead and make an alt.

If it is a cosmetic item that I am paying for why should I have to make a whole new character just to be able to use it. Also I’m not complaining that I can’t use them, I’m just saying I like them and would like to be able to use them. And there's the problem, you're gonna double the dev's development cycle with this kind of request.
