I'd just cancel your sub for now.
That way, should you get an itch to see if things have changed, you don't have to start back at square one with the game. Especially if changes are more in the end game area.

To be fair i feel like the lore of ARR is rushed just to fix the game. Heavensward was the first real experience. ARR is like a big compilation of many elements related to the FF universe. Really excited to see Endwalker. The only thing ESO has going for it is 5 main titles, a couple mobile games, some series spinoffs and such backing it's lore up, and I'm not a fan of ESO being canon because it's just absurd fan service and retcons existing stuff to make it's BS fit.
I detest retcons and the lore in ESO is squiffy at best.
That said, the elder scrolls series *is* bigger, if only because each game in the FF series for the most part, are individual stories independent of each other. Never played a FF game? That's fine, don't need to!
To appreciate TES games you need to play all of them. Which I have. Embarrassingly enough.
FFXIV doesn't have that great a story. There are flashes of goodness here and there - especially in Heavensward - but, overall, it's far too heavy on the expositionary dialogue, and is rife with scenes where we are told and not shown.
Final Fantasy's best characters were always either a) those with no powers at all (Locke, Edgar, Edge, Kain, Ramsa, etc.), or b) those for whom their powers were as much a curse as boon (Terra, Celes, Cloud, Aerith, Rydia, etc.). Unfortunately, the Echo is a massive supernatural force (essentially giving the player-character a direct hardline to Eorzea's equivalent of God) with no downside other than pitting our toons against a succession of clumsy baddies who are casually shown the door. We don't struggle, we don't lose, we aren't ever accidentally responsible for death and mahem... we just drift easily along from one victory after another, with no long-lasting consequences to ourselves or the world around us.
There has never been a classic hero's arc in FFXIV - never. ARR tells us by the end of the first act that we are the 'chosen one,' and from then on it's just a landslide of one massive success after another. Even Shadowbringers' feeble attempt to turn us into a ticking timebomb of sorts just sputtered out into nothing. Oh, you might accidentally become some terrifying ultra monster? Yeah, no, lol. Not happening.
