Just to play a slant of devils advocate we could be doing this about the common diet so high in sugars (or carbs, the quantity many eat is not necessary and is mostly a result of pleasure, culture issues, and stress management). The common diet is truly slowly killing many people, too large of a weight is becoming more and more common- people are straining their body significantly and greatly shortening both the general length of their lives and quality of that length.
Not that it should matter, but said by a large guy (6'1'' 260lb) - not a skinny person looking down on everyone lol.
There are many foods in FFXIV could fall under "purely for pleasure' as it's relatively non-valuable for the body to consume. Certainly you can do things to lessen the issue, eat a bunch of junk food but you're an Olympic power athlete.. well.. fine.. But your body in occasional quantities could do that to alcohol too (obviously frequently and in large quantities your body would be giving up, but same to 'junk food').
Which isn't to say ban all food lol, that'd be silly, but no alcohol imo is along the lines of "no junk food in FFXIV". Ban the Twinkies! lol
While vices are important to be managed or they can go all sorts of wrong... I think, at least currently, vices are very much a natural part of our lives that we take part in at all ages (junk for for kids, not saying lets get kids smoking lol).
Also imo there are some very tasty drinks, and some very very .. non-tasty drinks. You just probably didn't give many a try because you're already with a predisposed negative outlook on the idea (which is fine), but to say the variety of flavors in drinks is absolutely insane. I've a plum wine right now that is sweeter than most soda and you can't really taste the alcohol but you feel it internally lol. Personally I do limit drinking because I don't fancy the idea of being drunk, or causing severe stress to my body (am trying to be less weighty too :P), but all in good time.
People can't live without food. Food is a necessity. Alcohol, on the other hand, is pure poison. They sell it to young adults so that when they grow old they will live on medications. You get cheated into "feeling better" and they get your money systematically.
I don't excuse the overeating habits some people have. Usually, if everything is fine with a person their body should send the appropriate signals to stop eating. People getting severely overweight is a sign that something is just wrong and not working as intended. It's not that they are gluttons or something like that, they actually can't stop eating.
I have news for you kiddo. Everything you eat, drink and breathe is bad for you. Tap water is full of metals, hormones, herbicides and chloramines. Fruit is covered in pesticides, fish is full of mercury, most packaged food/drink has BPA in it, most rice contains arsenic, everything has too much sugar in it and over time, your body accumulates so many toxins and heavy metals from just breathing and living in urban environments that most human carcasses would be refused entry to a landfill site on the grounds they're toxic waste.Really?
Alcohol is a toxic substance for the human body. Regular consumption of alcohol is mainly linked with increased cancer rates and other complications with your body. The "Low-risk" is 14 units per week which is falsely considered "safe" by some people. There is no safe amount of drinking alcohol. Anything more than 14 units per week and you significantly start increasing your chances of getting a stroke, heart and liver disease, cancer of the mount, throat, and breasts, brain damage, and damage to other parts of your nervous system. These are the illnesses regular drinking of alcohol can bring you over the course of 10-20 years.
Alcohol is not even tasty aside from being completely unhealthy. I don't know how people are drinking it. I tried a couple of times and wanted to vomit after the first sip.
Oh, and if you're lucky enough to be American, your food includes so much mould, insects and excrement, the US government literally mandates how much exactly is allowed before action needs to be taken.
In short, alcohol in moderation isn't really going to do much harm to anyone in the long run. If it makes you feel any better, Earth is due for its own Calamity in the next few years so I really wouldn't worry about minor vices now.
Now I wish MNK skills on EW were based on drunken box
Not sure what the moral panic is for when alcohol and alcohol-related paraphernalia is already in the game right now. Plus, alcohol is already mentioned on the ESRB rating for the game so it shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone.
That said, I'm also not sure what a "drunk" effect or a specifically designated bar will accomplish that wax paper taped to your monitor and an RP bar can't replicate. I'd rather the adventurer guilds not be filled with dozens of people being dumb in shout chat any more than the cities have already.
Here is the thing couldn't we say that excess sugar and animal product consumption also leads to increased all cause mortality compared to those that do not consume such things. Being born into a poor family has an increased all cause mortality and also leads to an increase dependency on governments aid which is in fact paid for through tax dollars.Really?

Should we bar low income families from having children cause statistically they have poor outcomes in terms of health, mortality and economically.
But it does? Or you just want the effects of it like blurry vision and puking?

Or you could just RP drinking. In RP, my character has a fairly low alcohol tolerance: a single glass of wine is her limit, any more than that and she's sloshed.
