I was surprised when I found out FFXIV doesn't normally have an AFK timer. The only other game I've played that didn't boot you off the server for going AFK was GW1.

It's never been really necessary except at expansion launches. It's the recent sudden increase to the player base that's requiring it now.
And nothing of value was lost.
I mean to be fair players can get around the timer. So yay I guess.
Yoshi P himself has humbly requested people logout when they are not actively playing.
If it becomes commonplace to circumvent the issue that players and the devs are having they may resort to implementing the forced logout.
It's safe to assume that everyone would prefer to avoid such a obtrusive system, so I would not encourage long term afking.
Not a matter of encouraging it just a matter that it is possible and it will be done. They should have just started with a forced logout.Yoshi P himself has humbly requested people logout when they are not actively playing.

Gamers cannot be trusted with nice things, sometimes not all the time.
Remember when ShB launched and we had huge queues despite the auto-kick and Squenix was forced to boot everyone off the server during the night? Turns out the people circumventing the auto-kick were the actual problem and the queues dropped to a fraction of what they were. Looking forward for that happening again.
Yoshi-P is doing his best and is patching Endwalker. Please wait warmly until it is ready.
It actually got me earlier, I went to get a drink, realized I was hungry so fixed food too, came back to the trailer playing. I really didn't mean to be gone so long!
Make it 15 minutes, with a faster login process. Or, when someone tries to log in, immediately log off the longest AFK player to make room.

What if the longest AFK person is 30 seconds at that point? The reason we still need a queue is because no one is AFK.
