Is there any info in/out of game as to who Shatotto was exactly? All I can really gleam is that she was a Plainsfolk of Mhach who created Black Magic and the Stardust Rod, but there's not really any mention of her even throughout the Void Ark questline

I always so it more as an Easter egg since ShaNtotto was a very important character from FFXI (and the most powerful BLM).

Yeah I know who Shantotto is but the BLM questline makes the FFXIV Shatotto seem like a very important person in the history of black magic so I'm surprised she's not more prevalent in Mhach etc related content

Even on Encyclopedia Eorzea vol1 you don't have much information about her.
Like Payadopa said, it's more like an easter egg. She is the matriarch of our art and that's all.

I think really all there is to her lore-wise is that she's a key person in the development of the discipline of Black Magic and a very powerful mage. IIRC most of the Mhachi stuff that we think of when we think of Mhach (ie voidsent, geiger-esque buildings, etc) happened after her death too so I don't think she has much importance there.

I mean, he's her pupil. Like, sure, he can Chainspell Ancient Magic and also Manafont simultaneously... but she like split herself into three different versions of herself and opened portals to other dimensions and invented spells and such.

Shatotto was more famous during an earlier time of Mhach. The remnants of Mhach that *we* deal with come from that civilization's end, when she was but a historical figure. Remember, according to her lingering spirit, the wide hats that BLM are known for wasn't a thing when she was originally alive, because it reduced accuracy in spellcasting, but by the time of Mhach's end, the big hats + eye patch combo had come about due to their association with voidsent.

Don't you also sorta meet her during one of the expansion questline as a BLM? Can't remember which expansion but throughout the storyline you interact with a copy of her consciousness that is possessing your teacher.
