Would skill based match making be good for FFXIV?

I had a thought, inspired by the increased proliferation of SBMM systems in other games. They have been controversial, especially in PvP games but I was wondering what the community thought for DF content in this game.

By definition most players are average so would see little change, it would mostly effect either low skilled or high skilled players, essentially keeping them apart in DF content as being matched together seems to be a frustration for both groups.

    Cons:
Queue times could be increased slightly for players on the extreme edges of the skill spectrum, particularly high skill players. This would be mitigated by faster, smoother runs though.
Having to carry would be thing of the past for high skilled players.
Getting carried would be a thing of the past for low skilled players

Pros: Lower skilled players would feel less pressure to speed run at 100 miles per hour or perform to the high standards of others.
A reduction in friction and frustration in content.
New players might get a minute to smell the roses in a new dungeon instead of trying to keep up with an experienced and skilled group.

Disclaimer: I know this is a thought experiment that won't happen but thought it might be a good discussion during a content dip.

How skill would be determined is obviously open for debate.

Personally, I wouldn't be against it and think it could make the game more enjoyable for players at either extreme while not really effecting the majority by all that much. Im not desperate for it though as I don't want or expect to get carried and don't sweat about it if I'm the one carrying as long as people are at least trying.

It could work, but I reckon it would all depend on the execution of it. I wouldn't have an issue with it myself, I'd fall into the average group myself.

Most people in DF are not average. It becomes painfully obvious once you step into ShB content as a healer.

    You should try it.

Half the tanks have 0 idea what to do with their cooldowns and DPS collect mechanics like they were pokemon.

I made a fairly extensive suggestion about something similar to this a few years back:

    https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...Ms-hate-her%21

This was when there was more of an emphasis on Expert Roulette for weekly tomes mind. Now there's not nearly as much need to keep up on the daily Expert thanks to a bonanza of Tomes from other sources I honestly don't think it's a feature worth the work anymore. That coupled with Expert dungeons being easier than ever with very clear and obviously gated pulls, I just don't see anything like the same issues that I used to back in HW/SB.

Can't say I'd be keen on this for levelling dungeons or trials though. That content can be much sterner at times and there are still the occasional sprouts that will actually pay attention and listen to help and advice from time to time.

Doesn't the game already do something similar? I remember when I had the burger king crown it felt like I was matched up with sprouts more often. I currently got rid of it, and it seems like I get matched less often with sprouts? I'm unsure if that's intentional or just RNG though.. ???

When I first started playing I would always be put into either an all sprout group or a group with one mentor or one person with the flag(the in a party symbol next to your name you get when the game makes you not a sprout anymore). It may also have just been rng but later I began to notice when I hit around level 60 or 70 that I was now being placed with all sprouts. The same thing has begun to happen when I play a class I have less experience with regardless of not having the sprout symbol anymore, usually being placed with people who have the class I am playing at a high level or a mentor in the group.

My thought process has been the game may take into consideration dungeon clear times, time someone has spent on a given class, play time in general, how many times someone has completed a dungeon, possibly even how many times someone has died, and queues you with that information. I assume it is to place people who are more experienced with those less experienced with the assumption that mentoring could occur for someone who may just not know what they are doing yet.

This may all just be an assumption on my part, I may start taking more notes, and ask others to as well to see if it is more than conjecture.

Never heard any complaints about this before. When and where does this even happen?

Also if you're that high of a "skilled" player then why are you doing fast easy content? Most high skilled players just stick to the end-game content.

The whole idea of splitting the community up between "good" and "bad" players is bad overall. The good players should be helping the not so good get better.

various people in various threads in this sub-forum, for one

there are various daily roulettes for tomes, seals and gil, plus, good at "casual" content =/= good at "high-end" content

that's all fine and dandy, but if the good player is getting flamed for trying to help the bad player every so often (or a lot, depending on someone's luck), the "good" player will stop trying to help after a while

I'm always giving tips and what not to help people in dungeons and have never once been flamed. I bet the people trying to give the tips are doing in a tone that doesn't seem very pleasant. I have seen that before.

how very surprising of you to blame the people that are trying to help, totally did not expect that
