Why do so many of the instruments sound so terrible?

While I think the guitar was a pretty decent addition, and sounds pretty close to the real thing, the trumpet is nearer to an electric kazoo, and the violin is just... bad. I don't think the player instruments have ever sounded great - the notes they produce are too staccato, with no ability to fade or crescendo. And, as a result, certain pieces of music were never going to sound particularly swift. But... man... the bands lately that use some of these newer instruments just sound terrible. And I think a large part of that has to do with how alien the noises coming from their instruments are. Why is the sound sampling used so... 8-bit? Or midi file? It doesn't provoke feelings of nostalgia... but rather makes my character run as fast as possible out of earshot.

Part of the problem could be that some of the players you are listening to are using MIDI files.

Can someone remind me how to turn off performance sounds? Lately I keep loading into some very, very bad players and it's really obnoxious.

Yeah, I turned mine off months ago. One of the best decisions I've ever made in this game.

Out of curiosity : Do these midi files get added to their install folder , and why is it the rest of us here them if that's the case. Surely we would need the same files on our hard drives to hear any additional files added from other sources , or are they already part of the FF14 install?
