The Moon Goddess

Hi!

I have a huge question regarding the "Goddess of the Moon".
When I first started playing (I'm one month old here XD) I learned about Menphina who is reveared by the Miqo'te as the Goddess of the Moon but then while questing through Stormblood I found out about Nhaama who happens to also be The Goddess of the Moon worshipped by the Au Ra claiming to have been created by her.
And after a while I went to a Trial where I have to fight Tsukuyomi who we are told is the Divinity of the Moon and also a Primal if I'm not mistaken.

So my question is... Are they all the same Goddess? If not which one is real? If anyone out there is kind enough to enlight my doubts please help me with some lore knowledge. I've been a WoW player for more that 12 years and there we only have Elune so I'm really confused here

We don't know. Even after the new raid that is to delve into the mysteries surrounding the 12 we still might not know.

Just like in our world, different cultures on Hydaelyn have or had different deities that represent the moon like Artemis & Luna from Greek mythology, Chandra from Hinduism, and obviously the actual Japanese goddess Tsukuyomi that the FF14 version takes its namesake from.

Whether some of these deities share origins or not is a different story, that we can speculate a lot more into, but that would be getting a bit into spoiler territory.


Generally speaking though, the outright 'divine' doesn't exist in FF14.

Think of it like, "The Twelve" are the gods normally worshipped by Eorzeans (and elsewhere, to varying degrees, don't pay too much attention to Azeyma symbols in Azys La); while different areas worship different gods. Like you've noticed, the Xaella worship Azim and Nhaama, while in the rest of Othard, the "kami" are given more reverence; with the Tsukuyomi you fight being BASED on the legend of the Moon Goddess Tsukuyomi. (Fun fact: Tsukuyomi is a moon GOD, not a Goddess, in Japanese Mythology, but he's been represented as female so much in media that it's easy to get confused) Come Endwalker, we'll get the Myths of the Realm raid series when we'll explore more of the Lore behind the Twelve... anything else is strictly spoiler territory...

Oh, but you're far enough in the story for this to not be a spoiler: so Primals basically aren't the Gods they claim to be; rather, they're a fascimile of said entity manifested through faith and aether.

the actual Japanese goddess Tsukuyomi

Ahem. Tsukuyomi is the male counterpart and brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu. Like many deities and mythological figures, Japanese or otherwise, Japanese artists have no problem rendering him as a girl, little or otherwise. Shinto is kind of wild, though, in that such a thing isn't really breaking any rules.


(I see now I wasn't the first person to react to that.)

I'd be surprised if Nhaama was not inspired by the same entity as one of the Twelve, considering that we know Azim's likely origin now.

I really do look forward to the alliance raid series in 6.0 since the question of who the heck the Twelve really are/were has been hanging in the air for far too long.
