Ninja was introduced later after the game's release, but before they got rid of classes altogether on new jobs. The actual job being added was Ninja, and Rogue was merely created as the base class to give it a starter set of abilities so that it matched the leveling and growth of other jobs.

If the job had been added later, it would have just been Ninja and completely skipped having Rogue as a base class.

As for job suggestions, I would say any of the other melee jobs. Monk has 100% positional and no other major mechanics besides it's rotation. Dragoon has some positionals and 2 long combos in its rotation. You do have to maintain your meter to keep your DPS up and there's a lot going on. Samurai is pretty straightforward and is easy to do well with while also having a high skill ceiling. It focuses on building your Sen gauge which is done through your normal combos/rotation anyway, and only has 1 positional.

Short answer: if you want a lot of positionals and movement, go Monk.

That's a fair preference. And I imagine there are quite a few who would rather play an actual Archer over a Bard --not that Bard does much unique Bard-ery(?) -- or a Gunner over a mech/cannon/poison-blaster summoner, etc.

Sadly, the devs have used their poor handling of the SMN/SCH distinction as excuse to basically disallow any jobs that would use the same weapon type/aesthetic. So, no full-fledged Rogue, nor Thief/Scavenger/Wastelander/etc., so long as such would use best daggers.

If you want lots of positionals and light armor then monk is your dps of choice followed by Samurai.

Totally agree with the OP. Ninja really is not a natural evolution of rogue. It should have been 'thief.'

EXACTLY this! Locke is in the FF arsenal of things they could use. What I think a lot of people forget is Western devs paint rogues more as mid evil thief's/bandits basically and Eastern devs go more their route of that ninjutsu style.

The problem with rogue/ninja is exacerbated by the fact that rogue really feels like it's going in a Locke-like direction, and then suddenly here's mudra, and you're Edge/Shadow. And it's like: really? But, I kind of wanted to be Locke.

The nature of the game as an MMO means that loot and stealing doesn't really mean as much. If you remove the core feature of FF thieves from the game, what are you left with? FFXI THF had sneak attack/trick attack and increased loot drops, but NMs haven't dropped rare items since 1.0 and not even NIN can rely on just trick attack for gameplay content. If you want something that can have the ability to dash in and/or out, there's already DRG/MNK/SAM.

And it's not like SE is breaking new ground with mixing rogue and ninja either since thief was a requirement in a few FFs to be able to play ninja and Yuffie from FFVII blends ninjas and thieves. In FFXIV ROG was already blended with NIN from the very beginning since dual wield has always been a ninja ability.

I feel like people make threads like this wanting a specific job without thinking of whether or not it would actually work and make sense and without realizing that the devs probably had these same discussions about these same jobs years ago.

Some people have said that SE wasn't comfortable with the WoL being a rogue or a thief so it had to become a ninja but I don't know if there's any truth to that.

I personally love NIN, its fun to play and not just a free win like the wow variant of stealth classes..
