It's just human nature to care about other people's opinions. Especially if that person has a sizeable audience. It's ok if he didn't like the game. Sure, maybe he didn't approach it the best way but his opinion is still valid.
His opinion is not going to stop any of us from playing and enjoying it.
Was it a fair review? Not really. I think anyone with a brain would watch that stream and realize it was not a proper review/trial of the game.
Regardless, he's still entitled to his opinion.
The game isn't going to appeal to everyone. There are lots of games out there that are succesful, critically acclaimed, and highly recommended, but they don't interest me at all.
And I'm sure it's the same for a lot of you too.
I guess what I'm trying to say is: who cares?
It's ok if they didn't like his opinon. Sure, maybe you don't like hearing about it but their opinions are still valid.
Their opinions are not going to stop you from playing and enjoying the game.
Do you think they are being fair? Maybe not.
Regardless, they're still entitled to their opinions.
People being disingenuous and misleading isn't going to appeal to everyone. There are lots of ways to present an idea or opinion that don't interest me at all.
And I'm sure it's the same for a lot of you too.
I guess what I'm trying to say is: who cares?
Exactly. Given all of this, why should anyone take his opinion of the game seriously? The only people who I imagine taking his opinion and agreeing with it are people who are already biased against the game and looking for any confirmation/validation that the game is bad, even when it's done in a totally improper, biased way.1) The guy went into the game not wanting to like it. He had no open mind about it (like Asmon did)
2) Asmon originally considered boosting, but decided not to because it invalidates their opinion (which is exactly right)
3) Could've easily taken the job up to 60 with the free trial and did some savage at 50 and 60 levels easily
4) Quin could've easily just skipped the msq and done all the dungeons and trials/raids (by skip, I mean skip cutscenes as he goes from 1-60)
5) Says he was able to compete with 80 players, but dps parses on multiple ends showed that he was on the bottom of dps, and also being beaten by pld dps
6) Doesn't bother reading any of his tools (which follows his WoW streams, as he doesn't do it there either). So I expected below grade F- anyways
7) Saying the story sucks, but skipping 95% of it (aside from shb) lulll.
8) Comes in as an arshole-- leaves an arshole. Got everything he deserved as far as I'm concerned.
9) Clunky gameplay-- okay, fair enough. I'll actually accept that. Sometimes it is clunky. Not all games have this feeling that xiv does from time to time.
Overall C- since he's trying to be a chad, but failed (as I believe it's all for comedy effect). I don't think he actually gave the game a fair shot, but he was entertainingly stupid, and it was funny.
If even his own moderator called him out on it, that just goes to show you what type of people are watching it and going, "yeah, this guy is totally right."
That's why nobody should really worry. Those people were probably never going to play FFXIV anyway.
The game is doing extremely well. Asmongold gets over a million views on his Twitch streams of the game. People are googling for it more than WoW, and digital copies sold out.
Just like any big thing, not everyone's going to be into it. Let those people be, regardless of how they conduct themselves.
I meant to ask this earlier, but who is Quinn?
Journey to all fish: 1383/1729 (348 remaining) [79%]
Of course he's entitled to his opinion...
Why though isn't everyone else?
He can give his opinion all he wants- and players in the community can give their opinions all they want. What's baffling is the same people praising him for giving half baked takes on a game he clearly had every intention of hating from the start- also are calling everyone else toxic for daring to criticize him for it.
People are praising streamers for giving criticism, and saying that criticism is good for the game. Then, those same people are turning around and slamming people who criticize streamers. Well which is it? Is criticism good, or is it something to be avoided at all costs? If criticism is great when you agree, but bad when you disagree- then you don't actually think criticism is good- you think validation is good.
Isn't 'maybe you won't die if you don't stand in mechanics multiple times' fair criticism of a streamer who thinks he's god tier yet spends all his time dead being carried?
Isn't 'maybe play the game before you hate on it' fair criticism for a streamer that skipped it all then trashes things he didn't even experience?
Isn't 'calling the community trash then expecting them to not call you trash in return is pretty hypocritical' fair criticism of his attitude to other players?
Do the people going to bat for this streamer have the same adoration when they have a raid and someone's constantly standing in mechanics while also calling everyone else trash and blaming the healers?
I dunno, I just googled him and read his tweets. Some streamer who doesn't like FFXIV.
The game is slow and clunky if you are going to like compare it to those games where everyone is basically a ninja flipping around and sliding everywhere. So yes, I agree there. Character customization is a concern yes. I'm not sure about the whole lore thing as the Final Fantasy series in general is loaded with it. I think what FFXIV really has going for it is a dedicated development team that listens. That's really what the hype is all about as the players basically get what they want and the game is incrementally improved over time. It's a lot better than it was and keeps getting better. Games typically hit their golden age and then become a cash cow. FFXIV isn't milking yet. I think the golden age is now. Best enjoy it. Sad he doesn't want to be a part of it. The way I see it, most MMOs typically are what they are. FFXIV is working towards what it should be.
Well he certainly got some attention thats for sure, unfortunately its DSP flavoured. Even if this does increase his view counts it will almost certainly be a short term trend.
If you're going to stream to gamers, you need to be good at games. Being professionally toxic is a very dangerous feedback loop that so often destroys the streamer, its so common that making rise and fall videos is its own genre on YouTube. If you're no good at the content you are streaming then you are effectively an IRL streamer and when they embrace toxicity they either end up broke or in prison.
People will tune in to watch a car crash so it wouldn't surprise me if his metrics look good in the short term, but as people like DSP or Wings of Redemption prove, being terrible at games isn't good and if you compensate for lack of skill with toxicity then trouble is sure to follow.
I agree with everything you said.Of course he's entitled to his opinion...
Why though isn't everyone else?

The thing is, while all opinions are valid (because people are entitled to them), not all opinions are good.
Some opinions are bad because they're uninformed, biased, and unfair. Quin's opinion falls in this category.
And that's why it shouldn't be a big deal. We shouldn't even consider his opinion because we all can see that it's a badly formed opinion (even people who don't play FFXIV agree with this).
The people giving him praise for his half-baked opinion of FFXIV are the same people who were never going to give FFXIV a chance. These are people who were biased against the game from the beginning. And of course, those same people are going to bash those calling out Quin's bad take of the game. Because they need someone to say the game sucks.
What I'm trying to say is that we shouldn't even pay attention to half-baked opinions because they're not helpful at all.
Getting upset about Quin not liking FFXIV is like getting upset about a 10 year-old kid saying that Lord of the Rings was boring because Gandalf didn't shoot any fireballs out of his staff and characters talked too much.
Yeah, he has an audience. But here's the thing: the rational-minded section of his audience is calling him out for making a half-baked opinion.
Just let it be. Constantly criticizing him on his social media isn't going to achieve anything. Debating with his hardcore fans won't achieve anything.
The reason it won't achieve anything is because you're talking to an irrational audience that is biased against the game and doesn't care to hear your reasoning, no matter how logical.
All it's going to do is make the FFXIV community look like weirdos who freak out any time someone criticizes the game.
I don't have any problem with him disliking the game. I don't even have any issue with him boosting although, yeah, it's not a good way to actually learn the mechanics the game throws at you.
I will say that I don't like this guy's delivery. IDK if it's a bit or what. Maybe I am just tired of these edgelord types in my old age.
