I just hope situations such as this aren't exploited as a way to deflect legitimate criticism of the game.

It's already being used as a bludgeon by streamers and players who are eager to declare their hate for the community.

Thing is- when someone is saying the game is too easy, while they're spending the entire time dead. When someone is calling the community trash and insulting them, before crying that people didn't just take being called trash lying down. When someone is ignoring mechanics and blaming healers when they fail hard, and think they have 'godtier' skill to adequately judge the combat system. When someone says the game's story is trash after they completely skipped all of it and thus don't even know 1% of what is going on in the game.

I find it very hard to see how those criticisms can be taken as legitimate.

I can admit, if you skip 99% of the story for anything, you won't know what's going on... I don't think this is either a FFXIV specific problem, or something the devs can/should do something about.

If you have three people- one loves Lord of the Rings, the second hates it and has read them all and critically evaluated them and has reasoning for why they think it's a bad book series- and the third skipped to page 450 of Return of the King, read three paragraphs, complained that they didn't know what was going on and the book sucks and everyone who enjoys it are complete idiots.

Should I really be pretending that the third person has equal and valid opinions about the books to the first two?

Are we finally going the step beyond participation trophies- where even those that don't show up or put any effort in are going to get a gold star?

The fact of the matter if you ask any company or business whether there's any such thing as bad publicity, I'm sure they'll very quickly refute it, considering how nightmarish these can be for many to deal with. You seem to be under the delusion that because they were able to bounce back or recover that it went without any consequence or negativities at all. When the fact remains that many of these people of businesses would have been MUCH better off without the publicity in the first place.

Yes and as I have said the fact remains many streamers and content creators suffer severely. Some will bounce back, but if you want to insinuate in all cases of publicity that their bounceback was as a result of that original publicity, and not because of a reaction that was essentially forced upon them as a result. then I'm sorry but I'm simply going to just call that false. Yes, YouTubers and Streamers are definitely skipping to the bank joyfully whenever they lose deals as a result of the publicity.

But of course, since you wanted to interject midway through a discussion stream, the original conversation was in fact about whether there's such a thing as bad publicity, which there is. Rampant cancel culture was just one of the aforementioned examples. But alas I must clearly document every single example.

"It didn't interest me enough to keep going with" is a perfectly valid criticism of a story, and an uninteresting story is, in fact, bad.

I love this game's story, don't get me wrong, but finding it boring enough to skip is plenty reason to call it bad. A story isn't something you should have to slog through to "earn" the right to enjoy, y'know, the actual game.

1) The guy went into the game not wanting to like it. He had no open mind about it (like Asmon did)
2) Asmon originally considered boosting, but decided not to because it invalidates their opinion (which is exactly right)
3) Could've easily taken the job up to 60 with the free trial and did some savage at 50 and 60 levels easily
4) Quin could've easily just skipped the msq and done all the dungeons and trials/raids (by skip, I mean skip cutscenes as he goes from 1-60)
5) Says he was able to compete with 80 players, but dps parses on multiple ends showed that he was on the bottom of dps, and also being beaten by pld dps
6) Doesn't bother reading any of his tools (which follows his WoW streams, as he doesn't do it there either). So I expected below grade F- anyways
7) Saying the story sucks, but skipping 95% of it (aside from shb) lulll.
8) Comes in as an arshole-- leaves an arshole. Got everything he deserved as far as I'm concerned.
9) Clunky gameplay-- okay, fair enough. I'll actually accept that. Sometimes it is clunky. Not all games have this feeling that xiv does from time to time.

Overall C- since he's trying to be a chad, but failed (as I believe it's all for comedy effect). I don't think he actually gave the game a fair shot, but he was entertainingly stupid, and it was funny.

Also, him saying that he was able to keep up w/ seasoned level 80 players when he wasn't "sperging out" and someone finding copious amounts of evidence that it was truly not the case. Also, mod going rogue and telling him that he basically sucked was hilarious

Hey XIV isn't for everyone and thats fine. But watching him just,....IDK create this crapstorm is interesting to watch to say the least. I dont get involved in other people's crap because I like to sit in my own corner and have my own fun, but this is amazing to watch haha

If people are going "hey, you should harm yourself" or "I will come to your house and harm you" or similar threats, that would be a problem. But people simply saying (more or less) "You are making an uninformed disingenuous opinion and I will call you out on it", no, that is not a threat.

It's ok if he didn't like the game. Sure, maybe he didn't approach it the best way but his opinion is still valid.

His opinion is not going to stop any of us from playing and enjoying it.

Was it a fair review? Not really. I think anyone with a brain would watch that stream and realize it was not a proper review/trial of the game.

Regardless, he's still entitled to his opinion.

The game isn't going to appeal to everyone. There are lots of games out there that are succesful, critically acclaimed, and highly recommended, but they don't interest me at all.

And I'm sure it's the same for a lot of you too.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: who cares?
