Ground targeting sucks unless you use a macro

See title. Seriously though, is this something that the dev team is looking at fixing? It's really annoying trying to drop an Earthly Star manually only to spend precious seconds clicking on another player instead of the ground. Is there a way around this other than using a macro to drop ground abilities on top of targets?

Don't use a macro here, just gotten used to placing ground aoes. I know where I want it and just put it down (not on a specific player), worse thing that can ever happen is fat fingering the wrong button and setting off another action, but eh it's never the end of the world. You should have tried placing Earthly Star before the placer aoe was increased in size, it used to be tiny and didn't represent it correctly at all.

GW2 has a great option for ground target skills that allow you to place an aoe on button up instead of having to press the button twice. I'd love to see XIV bring that kind of functionality over here.

I've suggested in the past that either single action macros should queue, or mouseover and <t> should be an option you can toggle for certain abilities but it's always been an unpopular opinion. For some reason the playerbase seems to prefer it this way.

Do you have a suggestion though? I say that because I'm not against QoL improvements in principle but I can't really think of a way to improve it. The mouse gives you the flexibility you need and a macro gives you the ease of use, Personally I don't see a third way that would be an improvement.

Something along the lines of when you have a ground target ability ready, that you click through players instead of giving clicking on players priority. I've found that unless the ground is not occupied by anything that you end up clicking on whatever's there instead of the ground and the ability doesn't go off.

It's definitely bad, especially for keyboard and mouse users. I think it's a bit better for controller users.

I wish targeting in general would get updated, but I've learned to live with it.

MOBA have this sort of stuff under smart casting, it's so useful!

If you have a dash for example you might just tap it and go the way you were facing, meanwhile if you held it you could redirect the dash to a way you're not facing. Confident it would be super helpful for most people if they could implement it.

You might be able to reasonably add depth to skills too like dancer you may be able to hold it for a sec so it loads the marker (arrow) where you could dash not your facing direction and also choose the distance for example (do a half dash).

Heck if they improve button functions they may be able to add new concepts in general, like holding dash button may increase the distance over a 2 second period so you could have some like hyper dash. Might even be able to add the other way, like holding black mage aoe lightning lets you place it, but tapping it would be target as usual. Ninja blink, mouse outside of distance you can target? That's fine, it'll go max distance that direction- easy peasy!

They've other combo keys like being able to cast an ability at your feet, instead of target / mouse.

Not exactly related but I've though abilities you could use while stunned / in action could be neat too, like a self heal would be obvious, in WoW pvp you could use them to unstun yourself, but also you might get like a black mage spell where you could then weave in this other spell at the same time of casting (have to be careful or it would be super insane on the fingers lol, but could potentially be neat).

Roda already pointeded out as a possible option to those who want it. IMO is super handy.

I really particularly hate the samurai's movement ability in PvP - that's a ground target, and, combined with the innate action lag that this game suffers, it's pretty much useless. In fact, it's actually often less-than-useless - it winds up getting me killed more than it helps.
