So, I like to RP. And I enjoy some degree of bar-RP - mostly people-watching, but my main is a bit of a closet case, and not really an adventurer, so I like to take her out to bars and clubs for conversation, typically choosing a place at random.
Tonight, I went to a little house with about 10 people inside. I sit down at the bar and am immediately approached by the owner. We chat for a little bit, and eventually she mentions to my character that she(I) I am welcome to use the owner's room instead of the local inn, except when she's "seeing clients." A few minutes later and, apparently impressed enough with my toon, she openly offers her(me) a job... seeing clients.
Look, I get that this is a game. It's an escape, it's not real, nobody is at risk, everyone is an adult, lah lah lah. But all my character wanted to do was go out, have a drink and chat - not get propositioned by some in-universe madam regarding a position in the e-sex business. And this isn't an isolated incident - this is like the third time it's happened since I resubbed last month.
I'm not pearl-clutching - I don't give a rat's behind what anyone does behind closed doors. And, to at least a degree, I think the idea of an unseemly underbelly in the game makes the RP world a bit more gritty and believable.
But... that doesn't mean that I or my character want to be hit up in that way just because I happen to RP decently and visit a bar. Yes, I absolutely DO want to affiliate with other roleplayers - but we aren't all harlots-in-waiting (I just can't think of a polically correct way to say that), or aspiring courtesans. And I'm not crapping on the people who like that sort of thing. But to just assume that every person who walks into your otherwise really tasteful establishment is chomping at the bit to get into FFXIV's sex trade is so... wrong. And it's such a downer for me to have to refuse, because then the night's really over, since I feel like I need to get her out of there.
