You can get around the character limit by editing after posting within the limits. It's completely fine to just write words incoming as the only thing in the opening post. Then go and edit it and put in whatever lengthier thing you wanted to say.

Not character limit related, but if post length is a concern, I've found [hb] to be a useful tool. Use it to make "hidden boxes" and shorten portions of your post.
for example, if you have a large image, or an extended aside you wanna be able to tuck up. It's also good for hiding spoilers.
Hidden box also counts as part of the character limit pre edit. I ran into the character limit even with HB while talking about something lore wise. Always edit your posts if you need to write novellas of a post folks.
In theme of tips,
[QUOTE ] [ /QUOTE]
[QUOTE=ItMe;5603336 ] [ /QUOTE]
You can see if you want to have a quote by a person it's simply ="and their name here" followed by ;"post ID number here"
https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...=1#post5603336
There may be a nicer way to do this but by looking at a post's hyperlink you can see their post ID. As you can see the post ID in the link 5603336 is the same as in the quote of ItMe 5603336.
This is one way you can quote unquote-able people, like sometimes I have to use it to reference CM / GM in locked threads.

Another tip might be if you're on the phone you'll note that you can't edit your posts. This is because of the mobile interface they have for the forums, though it does provide you some other information you can't really get to sometimes (like if you view people's profiles there is extra info there).
However if you view the site in desktop mode, usually selected by one of those buttons close to the URL bar, you will see what you see on desktop.. which means you can see the edit button.
Bumping partly due to because I can. The other to see if anyone else has any other useful tips the forum doesn't teach. When it comes to writing posts.
Here's another sort of related one:
Clipboard history can be useful if you're doing the edit trick to get around post lengths, among other things. By using clipboard history if you accidentally copied something after you had copied your long text you can still get it back. To turn it on you can simply type clipboard in your search bar of your desktop (in the taskbar), clicking on that opening settings of that feature and you can turn it on. When activated you can view your clipboard history by simply pressing the startmenu (windows logo) key + v.
A program you can use for posting images relatively easily is greenshot, open source program, allows you to take screenshots of your entire or partial of your screen, mark it up, and easily copy, paste, and or upload it. There are plenty of other options, technically there is a built in variant for windows but it, as far as I know, doesn't upload to imgur for you. I like greenshot because it just makes it easy to snap a picture, tell it to send to imgur, and then paste the link it automatically copies into the clipboard after about a second. https://getgreenshot.org/
[IMG ]example[ /IMG] for image quotes, you can check if your image is right by going to advanced editing and previewing your post. URLs that end in .jpg .png .gif are generally what you're looking for. If it's like restlesschocobos.com/1234 (not a site) then A. what are you looking at sir? and B. that's probably not going to work because it doesn't end in an image format

Yes I'm once again necroing my own thread. Because again I don't know why we don't have a thread like this as a sticky somewhere on this forum. I also want to say that yes you can edit stuff while using your phone. You just can't do so while using the mobile version of the browser. To get around such pesky restrictions you just need to click on the use/see desktop version button I do believe is at the bottom of the screen and bam you can edit posts while posting from your phone. Might need to zoom and enhance.
