I think MCH just wasn't as much in focus because MCH already got a major rework in SHB.To me it feels like MCH got pretty much the same treatment the DRK got. We got one lackluster upgrade to one of our skills, almost literally worse Air Anchor and a buff to our fancy dot. All phys ranged got their AoE mitigation recast reduced at the same time, so eh. While other 2 phys ranged jobs got nice QoL changes. So, it's pretty much the same job as it was in ShB only slightly more clunky due to Drill/Air Anchor/Chansaw timing weirdly aligning with Hypercharge.
Both MCH and DRk did not get a great focus and they're the most criticized rework.
Darkside is on the same level as Blood of the dragon, if you respect the basics of your rotation you'll never drop it.
Weirdly enough, both got an awful pet and Phoenix was introduced in the very same expansion.
Talking about SMN, it's one of the jobs that gets a suspicious amount of focus every expansions, hopefully the next time will be the last.

There might be some that miss the support and the ammo gauge, but overall yes. The MCH rework is an amazing base and that's the problem. It's just a base.
Yoshida said it would be now better to be expanded upon but... You know the result.
I don't want to go back to SB MCH, ShB MCH is much better.
However, they removed a bit too much. The support, the wildfire combo is now reduced to spam Heat blast, the ammo gauge should've been expanded upon, not deleted.
Both gauges are reduced to 0-100, need 50 to spend with one spending only 50 and the other consume the whole gauge.
If they simply:
-Expanded upon the heat gauge & improved heat blast spam
-Made the Queen more than a glorified dot
-Expanded the utility of the ranged role
-Reworked Flamethrower AND/OR Wildfire
I would've been the conductor of the hype train. But all we got was a shotgun for dungeons and a pizza launcher named "Chainsaw" to kill the dream of actually using a chainsaw.
And I won't deal with the headhache that is the Queen, MCH remains the job of my heart but I won't main it until they adress the issues.
