Sprout WoW Refugee Here w/Tips For Other Refugees

Holy moly, all this talk about THAT streamer. I'm certainly no fan of theirs and have no intention of name dropping them here. I see there is plenty of that already, so I am nervous to share this with all the toxicity concerns around here.

I recently began my adventure in to FFXIV with my wife and we've been having an amazing time. The community has been so inclusive, kind, and generous. There are so many helpful people. The overall experience has been exceedingly positive, and I just want to give back by sharing some of the things I wish I had known when I started having just arrived from over a decade of WoW experience.

I'm not here to complain about a competitor's game, however. FF has been a pleasure, however fraught with questions I was initially (though I still kind of am). There are no spoilers here of any kind, btw.

Some of those were "is there transmog? is there a barber? what about flying? what is an MSQ?" Fortunately I have been friends with a guild on Gilgamesh that originated in WoW a decade ago, and they were thrilled to finally have my wife and I in the game (friendships made to last!). They were kind enough to answer all of these questions, show us around, help us with gear, and are still helping.

But here are the things I wish I had known going into A Realm Reborn. I translated much of what I could into WoW terms, such as "transmog" to "glamouring" and "flight paths" to "aetheryte, etc.

Sprout WoW Refugee's Tips For A Realm Reborn

I don't know if this will be helpful for anyone, but it is an attempt to give back to the kindness the community has shown. My friends and I ran a guild designed to make others feel safe and enjoy the game. We were a haven for folks looking to escape the trials of every day life and were privileged enough to help support a healthy LGBTQ community. Some of them teenagers struggling with emotional and psychological abuse from their own family.

I hope some of these tips will help others coming into the game with a similar experience to mine, but without the immediate free company, to navigate the game somewhat easier.

Thank for your fostering such an awesome community. Everyone I've met has been awesome so, and there are so many sprouts its insane! If I can improve the tips, or if I got something wrong (which is entirely likely), please let me know.

I'll be in ARR a bit longer as I'm working on my relic weapon now. Having a blast.

    See you in Eorzea.

I'm not sure why other games player love to use this word "refugee" . . .

There is only one religion in FF14, you are either an Eorzean or you are not.

Wow! As a former wow player myself, I wish I'd seen this stuff before I started. Even now with a level 80 Dragoon and going into Stormblood post-patch content, I didn't have all of the dungeon unlocks. Super helpful post -- I hope many others see it before I did! Glad you're enjoying the game and the community as much as myself!

Thank you <3 I am super happy to be here. The moniker is making the rounds simply because there are a lot of people (so it would seem, anyway), that feel somewhat abandoned by the direction of a game they loved. Myself included. And so my spare time is seeking refuge in a game that respects my time and creates the kind of content I'd like to play. So here I am! Eorzea is awesome.

Zepla has a good video about XIV slang for any WoW players. A good series for non spoilery things is Wesk Alber's Your first day. They go through the game and go over unlocks and more than just the msq.

I'm actually to the point of not calling them refugee's anymore. I TRULY and HONESTLY feel empathy for them. I used to play WoW 8-10 hours a day in my bachelor years. So it has a special place in my memory and heart of fun times that I had.

Blizzard has really dropped the ball for the last 4-5 years...and I feel bad about those that are going through the worst that WoW has to offer. WoW died when Classic was re-released...and I understand why players rush back to 15 year old content...because all the new content is rudderless and disheartening.

So I will refuse to call them refugee's as I was once one long ago after I left Cataclysm. I was left....homeless, derelict, betrayed.

We take in the homeless and care for them, and get them back on their feet. I have noticed a HUGE influx of players, and I for one welcome it.

Blizzards sun is setting, and truly hope they find the their direction again to gain back the players trust. I can only hope that FFXIV watches and takes notes of the hubris of WoW. We need both games...we need them to compete...they are better off with each other. FFXIV must not make the same mistake....it has been afforded a second chance....rarely do you get a third.

Zepla is awesome. One of her testimonials was, perhaps, the first video of hers I happened to come across. It helped me decide to make the switch and give the game a fresh go. I'd tried and failed about 4 times to get into the game when my previous main MMO was still "just good enough". Sunk cost fallacy is real, man. But her description of being alone in her garrison was visceral to say the least. The problem I've had is that there wasn't something written down that I could go and refer to on the fly. Sitting to watch a video and pull up time stamps wasn't the most accessible way of refreshing my memory on "where and what", so to speak. I know there are articles on the subject as well, but something straight and to the point was nowhere to be seen. There are just so many articles that are gratuitous instead of just telling me what I need to know quickly and efficiently.

    Welcome to Eorzea!

It's great to see so many new people from other games (not just WoW) joining FFXIV, and it's even better to see new players like yourself actually trying to help each other out with making such guides, so great job! If I can give some slight additions for your benefit and others too: I assume this is your first FF game right? In which case the percularities of the FF series might not be readily apparent especially coming in from WoW which has an established lore and each game is directly connected - the FF series on the other hand, are traditionally unique with each title or game usually featuring a whole new independent story and world with only certain reoccuring elements shared between games (the Job system and the Jobs that make up it, almighty crystals, magic spell and item/gear/weapon names, chocobos and moogles, reoccuring monster designs and names, summon magic, a character named Cid, airships etc), so this may be all puzzling and confusing to a new player.

Hence I recommend fansites like the FF Wiki if you're interested in the first 13 FF games that came before FFXIV, the title that came after it, and the many spinoffs, sequels, prequels and tie-in games to the main series itself that FFXIV is a part of, especially if you're intrigued by FFXIV's main storyline - FFXIV references all these titles as fanservice so you might miss many of these clever references as they appear throughout the game (FFXIV is meant to be a tribute to the history of the FF series in general).

Secondly, in regards to abbreviations, player created terms and slang used in FFXIV, I find this resource has helped a lot: https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/D...erms_and_Slang

Either way, great work and once again, welcome to FFXIV and Eorzea new adventurers! May you all walk in the light of the Crystal!

Whenever I have a player asking about how to unlock stuff I answer their questions and link a useful Gamer Escape page so they have the resource in the future (link below). It also has a basic gear progression guide too.

@ OP - You may want to add the Color Your World quest below the glamor system quest since it unlocks the ability to dye gear.

    Excellent information.

As mentioned, WeskAlber is really good on Youtube, notably for beginner's that are interested in rotations. In addition, if you're interested in min/maxing your gear, join The Balance Discord. There are profession/job guides available, rotations and the aforementioned min/maxing of gear. Good luck and have a blast!
