Horizontal float of wall-mounted items

Has anyone tried to make it work? So far I've only gotten it to work on the previewer on the bottom side of a White Rectangular Partition (which is usually an indicator that it can technically work). Placing it from the storage will make it snap back to the vertical side.

What I've tried:
Placing it fast
Placing it slowly
Placing it on different areas on the bottom side
Placing other wall-mounted items on the tile where it will snap

What I haven't tried yet:
Placing multiple Rectangulars next to each other (in various distances)
Floating any other item (esp. Partitions) next to the vertical tiles to occupy the tiles

I don't think it's possible through normal means. Every time I've had an item take on a bizarre angle of orientation when moving it around, it's always snapped back to its intended orientation when I try placing it.

Whether there's some mod out there can be used to accomplish it is something I don't know and don't care to investigate.

It really would be nice if SE would add the ability to rotate items around any axis in addition to giving us control over vertical placement without resorting to glitches.

If you're trying to get the look of an awning or very thin shelf, I'd probably go with floating a rug instead.
