I can get this boss down to like 10% and I just get insta-killed out of nowhere. Is there any way to avoid this?

It's probably Garrote. IIRC you need to kill the dragon and then stand in the bubble it drops to remove the debuff.
If someone wins an argument, they have learned nothing.
FOR DOCKHAND!
With enough dps you can kill the boss before that point.
Probably dying to the Fire+Ice mechanic in the final phase that will instantly kill you as soon as it starts since there is no one to pass the debuff to. Just gotta kill Nael before that part starts, which is not easy solo. I can kill him instantly at the start of the fight with max level Blue Mage if I get DH Crit Sting. Just gotta do a little bit of damage first, but not enough to skip to golems, then boom, and if you're lucky it kills him right there.
Pretty sure this is what kills the OP.
It was doable when we had i480 so it should be even easier now. Player just need to save their burst window for that mechanic + while Nael is casting another mech (She can’t perform the fire+ice mech while casting, giving us more time to burn her).
You are dying to Fire and Ice. Without at least 4 people, there is not enough time for the mechanic to cycle properly, leading to instant death from the ice.
So what you need to do solo is hold your burst until 47% That is when Nael transitions into the phase where Fire and Ice start. You have to be on a job that has the burst to deal 47% of Nael's HP in less than 10 seconds (maybe even a little less).
It's been doable on SAM for quite a while now, since about i470 BIS (maybe even before that). I'm sure other jobs could do it too, as many have better burst than SAM.
Basically don't use anything before you trigger Nael leaving and Golems phase that has longer than 90 seconds on the cooldown. Nael only has like 750k HP or whatever, so it's really very easy to burst her down quickly, but in this case you want to save everything for 47%.
Alternatively, you could do what Espritduo suggests on BLU. There's really no need to leave it up to RNG though.

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore
When i was first learning the timing for this on BLM, i failed consistently at about the same point you mention(always felt 1 or 2 spells short at most). What i was doing wrong was going full burst as soon as the phase shift happened. Waiting for the Heavensfall cast to start was the key for me to get it.
