Basically this. If I want balanced pvp I am going to play an FPS. I could not even imagine how toxic it would get. They would have to design it like Aion where there are specific zone that flag you for pvp.
The problems with Open World PvP in this game:
The way this game is designed is to make us work together to take down enemies, not fight eachother. Even the PvP lore that exists is us playfighting, doing military drills together. All the other PvP like Triple Triad, Lord of Verminion and Chocobo Racing are just good fun and nobody could seriously get toxic over those.
- There is a lack of lore underpinning why we would do it. Why are Eorzeans killing eachother? That needs to be explained - all the city states are friends.
- It would promote players to fight eachother, making them more toxic toward eachother.
- Duels are restricted to The Wolves' Den and I can understand why. Duels can be really annoying in the world as people walk into a busy market area just to create a scene and annoy everyone.
- I'm not sure if they can switch between PvE and PvP hotbars in the same zone but I expect they could find a way to do it if they really wanted to.
I think this game puts you into instances for most things on purpose, because any MMO that has a lot of open world content usually ends up very laggy with too many people. An instance allows them to limit that better while connecting people from other servers who want to do the same activity (such as PvP).
Seriously? From all the arguments its the "Lore Card" youre playing?
You don't need to have a legit reason to resolve into banditry and thievery, and sometimes, people just want to be the bad guy for a change. There is no Fantasy setting that doesn't have any banditry happening at some point and Final Fantasy is no exception to that, there is plenty of bandits and cutthroats roaming Eorzea in every expansion, so why cant we join in on the fun?
I hear there are other mmos that focus on open world pvp. Maybe those would be more your style.
Really don't want this game to become pvp focused, or have any pvp in the overworld.
For the same reason the rogues guild isn't the thieves guild: the devs have said they want the WoL to be unambiguously good, even if that means RIP your OC or RP.
I don't like the PvP so I don't do it. Idk what you're getting at? Open world PvP is not the same at all. I could go on a killing spree in BDO to my hearts content and if I so chose to ruin a newbie's day I could (though I didn't) This would not be good for this game at all. A story oriented game such as this with instanced combat etc doesn't fit with open world PvP. They want to add more PvP modes cool be my guest, just not open world.
Right, meanwhile drk questline has us kill and slaughter and bathe in the blood of multiple people and monsters, and now we have Reaper coming out which is even less good. It’s a poor argument.

When the game's story becomes self-aware:
Sounds like a holy crusade to me lol.
But SQSX can't control what you the player headcannons, only what your WoL does in narrative.
Right, DRK, the job quest focused around self love and moogles teaching you the meaning of friendship.
Yes how very evil.
And no one knows what Reapers deal will be yet so let's get back to that once we have anything concrete to go off of.
I'm not against OW PvP, but I do think it'd need to be an opt in/opt out sort of deal for it to work.
