    No it wasn't. It was based on Gilgamesh's memories of the real Enkidu from Planet R in FFV - the chicken Enkidu was merely an ordinary chicken he caught that he planned to eat, only for the bird to attack him furiously, which Gil was so impressed with, he decided to adopt it and named it after his missing companion (painting it green in the process to better resemble his friend).

    The Primal Enkidu is thus just an aetheric construct from Gilgamesh's memories and his homesick longing to see his friend, made possible by a crate load of crystals (of course, given that was part of the Hildibrand quests, a little bending of the lore occured).
