Constructive: Why your MMO sucks...and why that's okay

Josh Strife Hayes, a YT content creator focused on the MMO genre has put out an interesting little commentary on players focusing too much on the negative aspects of the games they play and therefore are more likely to bring up those negatives when people ask if they should play the game.

With a lot of the talk of 'welcoming' wow refugees and what we should do during content lulls, it seemed like something worth linking for people.

Josh is pretty biased, nice to see him step outta that.

Yeah I've seen his bias in some of his earlier videos, but in his more 'theoretical' and essay style videos he lays out his arguments fairly constructively to the point where even if you disagree you can see the methodology that got him there.

You don't love MMOs until you hate MMOs. Real gaming moments are when you shake your fist at the sky and curse the devs who created the virtual world you care so much about.

The problem is we just don't have anything better. The mmorpg market is pretty stale right now, and only triple A publishers can actually afford to produce a potentially good one, or rather one that isn't indie and niche. Even then that doesn't guarantee the game would actually be good, New World is backed by Amazon, and while it seems like a fine novelty, I don't know if it'll actually be that good, or something I'd want to play long term I mean. I'm really just here to stay in FFXIV, so I'd like to see this game improved further.

In my experience, people who ask which one to play generally don't last long enough with MMOs as a genre to stick around in any of them. Gotta stick around to figure out which suck is for you!

I do agree with this in general.

But with FFXIV it seems to be different. It seems like people focus on the positives when people ask if they should play. Maybe because there are genuinely not the same amount of negatives that there are in other games.

Who cares, you are all adults unless you stole your parents credit card, if you like a game you stay if you don't like a game you leave. Easy.
