Don't replace WAR, be a viable pick for other situations!

Currently, GLA is the whore of the game, giving away rampart and sentinel to all classes with a slight reduction of ability. WAR has better defenses currently, more potent blocks (parry takes 0-5 dmg from ifrit, block takes 500+) , rampart, sentinel, and vengeance which is a 50% reduct like sent all on its own (and magic with af body!) not to mention access to PUG second wind and feather foot. blood bath and rampage with steel cyclone more than make up for lack of a self cure, it's more like a constant auto regen. also really high hp.

I've personally run into the wolf area for mask of mortal hex and tanked the whole group (albiet in a full party for the bonus and a whm curing me till i got tp) once you get first steel cyclone off you're self sufficient for the rest of the fight.

anyways back to the point. War is a great tank, tanks tons of mobs, the more there are the bigger heal it gets from rampage as well as many mitigation skills and high enough hp to survive hellfire naked.

Here's my suggestion: simply make pld have magic resistance trait. There's nothing physical in the game that can oneshot it's hp, however voice of the dragon from a chimera can oneshot a pld that isn't wearing a double meld hp set. If we give it a base reduction to magic, it'll offset its low hp and make it a viable pick as a main tank again. 10~20% is all it needs to cut off.

With this change, WAR is still a great tank for nearly everything, but PLD can regain it's place in tanking the stronger mobs because it's low hp is no longer a problem.

Many players have been mentioning the addition of physical damage resistance; however, magic is the current destroyer of paladin from what I've experienced. I'm currently working on various specific magic resistance sets for PLD. I'm curious to see if these will make a difference. From what ive calculated, PLD can gain a total of ~+100 magic resistance to a specific element if they go all out with accessories, a elemental crown, and elemental resist materia on belt/shield (maybe im missing another gear slot). Ahh yes, Primal weapons.

The problem is, as of 1.20a testing, Meva blocks magic on a 1:1 ratio. With that said, it's my personal belief that stacking hp would be both easier and more effective than stacking various resistances and Meva. With both of these statements in mind, WAR needs none of this to be effective.

The 1:1 being 1 Meva/resistance (they are the same, Meva is just for all elements rather than just one) is 1 damage reduced. This was tested with Ifrit's vulcan burst since it's damage is almost constant at all points.

Now with all the effort to stack Meva (short of triple on a sent/cobalt helm) on all avail peices, a double HP meld on just one piece (i.e shield) will trump all of that.

Ofc You cannot put HP on helm, so Meva on helm would be wonderful. I myself had a double Meva for a total of 34 on a sent helm. It helped a little bit, added up over time. Aside from that you'd want double hp on sent boots, double hp on cobalt/sent gloves, double hp on cobalt +1 body, and double hp on vint shield +1 is pretty much the best you can get (assuming you dont have tons of mils to toss on higher melds, i consider this an economical build) Assuming about 110 hp extra on each piece from melds, you should be hitting 4k hp easy. your accessories would be 1 18 vit ring (hq) enm +10 bracet (hq) stonewall earrings (enm +10) 1 stonewall ring (40 hp) with double enm on belt and a double enm on sword ( or the new garuda sword) that'd be a perfect build and how pld currently works in the game.

However a simple magic reduction can remove all the hp for the most part, assuming you take hellfire for 4000 (thats about a naked hellfire with 1 pillar down) 20% of that would be 800 dmg reduced, making it 3200. Avg pld with even 1 single hp materia gets about 3.3k hp in a full party. a single hp on everything will let you eat a hellfire naked. My war has 4.2k hp and can eat a hellfire naked, pld should be able to as well.

note: by naked i mean no sent vengeance rampart. protect is still on, i dare not test without protect lol.
