Consistent, replicate-able DX Error with Gathering Log

I have figured out exactly how to trigger the DX Error crash related to Gathering Log.


Step 1: Open Gathering Log.

Step 2: Navigate to the Skysteel Tool page. Select the item gathered in the Diadem. (It may happen to any item gathered in the diadem, but I've only personally confirmed those.)

Step 3: Close the Gathering Log.

Step 4: Re-open the Gathering Log.

Your game will now have crashed due to a DX11 Error.

Please forward this to the people that need to see it for fixing. I have made a video demonstrating it, and I've had several friends with different setups re-create it.

What have you tried to alleviate the problem? Does this crash happen when Final Fantasy XIV is the only program running? Also could you provide a system report? Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'

I've tried it with only FFXIV running, it still happens. I've lowered gfx settings to minimum, it still happens. I've had multiple other people with varied systems replicate it happening when they follow those steps, so it's most likely not system-dependent. I've even had other people do complete reinstalls and still encounter exact same issue.

Good morning and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Have any changes happened to the device before the issue began? We would also like to recommend several other troubleshooting steps:

1) Make sure that your hardware is not overheating and remove any overclocks you may have on your graphics card or processor. Please check that any fans or vents are clear of blocks.
2) Disable any additional programs that could cause interference with the game itself including chat programs. Also, remove any custom configurations made using graphics driver-level programs
3) Remove any mods or injectors from the game or system
4) Turn off Fullscreen Optimizations. Find the executable file for the game (normally found in the install folder), right-click it and select 'Properties'. Under the 'Compatibility' tab, check the box labeled 'Disable Fullscreen Optimizations', then click 'Apply'.
5) Remove any unnecessary USB or audio devices (controllers, headphones, flash drives etc.)
6) Update and reinstall the drivers for your graphics card
7) Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything
8) Install FINAL FANTASY XIV and Windows onto the same drive (preferably the C:/ drive)

I've done most of those except installing on same drive as windows (can't fit both, I have dedicated windows drive SSD) and complete reinstall (which would take so long and from what I've gathered, change nothing). Can I get one of the moderators to try out the steps I've linked on their game? It literally takes less than a minute, less than half a minute even. And it will crash every single time. I've yet to encounter any player who've tried it that *didn't* crash.

So to summarize:

1) Make sure that your hardware is not overheating and remove any overclocks you may have on your graphics card or processor. Please check that any fans or vents are clear of blocks.

All fans are clean, all hardware is running smoothly and well below 50C. No overclocking is done, whatsoever.

2) Disable any additional programs that could cause interference with the game itself including chat programs. Also, remove any custom configurations made using graphics driver-level programs

I've done this on a completely clean boot, with absolutely no processes other than essential windows ones running in background. I have not used any graphics driver program settings on FFXIV.

3) Remove any mods or injectors from the game or system

I have no mods or injectors, and I've never had any. My game is completely unmodified.

4) Turn off Fullscreen Optimizations. Find the executable file for the game (normally found in the install folder), right-click it and select 'Properties'. Under the 'Compatibility' tab, check the box labeled 'Disable Fullscreen Optimizations', then click 'Apply'.

I've tried this, did not make any difference

The crash happens even when the only peripherals attached are keyboard, mouse and display.

I've updated and performed clean installs of all drivers.

This has already been attempted to no effect, as per earlier question.

8) Install FINAL FANTASY XIV and Windows onto the same drive (preferably the C:/ drive)

Can sadly not attempt this personally, but I've had friends reproduce the exact same crash with this criteria fulfilled.

Yeah, seems like this started to happen after a patch. I never had this issue and my computer has no changes made.

No. I will not do that until you confirm the crash *does not* happen on your machines. Or any machine, for that matter. Until I see proof someone, anyone, will *not* crash performing those steps I've described, I will not spend an entire day's worth of free time on a wild goose chase. Sorry about the rudeness, but it takes so long to do that, that I will not commit to it unless I have at least a sliver of hope it will fix the crash.
