Only if you sign a contract to pay for mineSo I'm trying to think of a way to make an apartment a more attractive option compared to housing, and one of the things that may help several other issues is a slight tweak to how Apartments work, specifically:
- Available once you achieve a rank of Sergeant Third Class in any GC
- Cost reduced to 100k gil
- Now has rent of 10k gil/week, but comes with four weeks of rent prepaid
- Rent is due on or before the weekly reset
- Rent can be pre-paid for up to three months
- You will be moogle mailed when you have a month (and then again when you have a week) of rent remaining
- You will be evicted from your apartment if rent is not paid by the weekly reset

You know, with all the housing threads/complaints you have, I honestly believe you're just a troll at this point, or you have some really silly ideas.
My opinion; nah.
Unless apartments are to be expanded (say increasing size and providing upgrading options or implementing a relocation feature similar to what is available for private plots), there's no point making any changes at all. As things stand apartments are far more affordable than private plots, more widely available, players can have an apartment in addition to a private plot, can have separate apartments on alternate characters, and can be used as extra storage for any indoor furnishings one might have accumulated. They can also be used to create a cheaper teleport point to whichever city you find yourself frequenting most. If any changes are needing to be made it's to the private plots; specifically closing certain loopholes in ownership restrictions and either standardizing or eliminating the vacancy lockout timer for new purchases.
+1
Is it real life or a video game at that point? So I'm trying to think of a way to make an apartment a more attractive option compared to housing, and one of the things that may help several other issues is a slight tweak to how Apartments work, specifically:

If the typical reaction to paying a recurring fee to keep the highly desirable, more limited quantity house is "NO!!!!!", what makes you think requiring a recurring fee for an apartment is going to get more players to want apartments over houses?
Freebies are always good, I'll tuck it away to buy more decor for my existing apartment, FC and personal medium. Now, /sarcasm off, imo, rent for apts is a silly idea, are you just a troll?????

EQ2 houses you pay rent on. You can escrow a load of time in advance. You pay via a panel that pops up on your screen before you zone in. Sorta like the menu you get when you click the entrance portal....how would having to pay rent make apartments more appealing? Even if it comes with a reduced initial cost.
How would the rent even be paid? Would you have to walk up to an NPC every week to pay? As far as I know there is no system (yet) that would just automatically take gil from your inventory - if my assumption here is correct and they would have to implement a system like that in the first place, I'd think it a waste of ressources. And if such a system could/would work: Would it be able to take gil out of your retainers pockets? Or do you need to make sure you always have the needed amount on your person? (Personally, I keep most of my gil on my retainers)
What purpose would it serve to evict people from their apartments? On the majority of worlds, there are enough apartments for anyone who wants one (Balmung might be an exception, never been there). Auto-demolition for houses is a thing because there arent enough for everyone, so they want to make sure that only people who use their house get to keep it. But apartments face no such shortage, so theres not need for eviction or auto-demolition.
All in all... what a terrible idea that doesnt seem to serve any purpose (more realism?).
That said, no. Rent is dumb.

Apartments have the potential to be excellent replacements for a house if there was an option to upgrade them, which I know folks have talked about plenty before. If you want them to be a gill sink, ideas like upgradable floor plans, new apartment only motifs, adding on a balcony for outdoor decorations, or maybe a greenhouse kind of thing would probably more enticing to people them having them pay rent. How cool would it be if you could get a "luxury apartment" with the layout of a mansion?
