I have to wonder if people like this use ignorance as an excuse in every aspect of their lives, or just here.

"Officer, I'm sure the posted speed limit said 55, but I have 5 jobs, 3 wives, and 17 children how could you expect me to read those?"

In real life there is precedent that going over the speed limit results in a ticket. Ignorance in that situation is not a viable excuse to get oneself out of trouble, though a lenient officer might let someone off the hook if they are new to the area and simply didn't see the sign (since people in the US seem to universally ignore speed limits and go 5+ miles over).

They've been running these events for 3 years and every year they always rotate the moogle turn ins as a form of grace period. They didn't really do a good job telling people that it was limited and honestly even I didn't believe anyone telling me it was, because that isn't how the event worked. What they should have done if they wanted it to be different is to use a different NPC entirely and not make the items tomestones. It really just comes down to that.

That's on you. Making an incorrect assumption instead of informing thyself. Anyway, I disagree. It was crystal clear that this wasn't normal. 1. Because it was a month after the last one. 2. Because it was expressly stated to be a fanfest special with different rules (this is the part where 'inform thyself' comes into play). 3. Because even in game the Moogle had a distinctly different mark above it. And 4. Because the tomestone pay out was double what it would usually be.

As I've said before, at some point it ceases to be an SE issue and starts to be a player issue. At some point you're going to be expected to make an effort to inform yourself through the myriad of channels that SE has ready for you to do such with.

probably some "new" reddit or twitter thing that's been making the rounds there and spilling to the forums now
I would imagine so. It's why I disengaged, there's no real point continuing with it.

hey guilty as charged! Didn't ever say I was innocent on that one bit. However, when you set three years precedent and then choose to suddenly change it, and you are hearing news from secondary sources saying otherwise, are you going to believe someone that isn't the primary source? Not like people haven't been burned before that way.

Considering I work retail, I can assure you most of the people who keep repeating themselves over and over blaming SE for their own inability to read and their own assumptions towards the event are 100% the same sorts who would scream down retail workers and their managers for an hour because they didn't read fine print about returns.

It's tiring and why I stopped responding to most of them. Children throwing tantrums will never listen to reason, so at this point it's better to upvote the actual reasonable adults in the conversation and otherwise not engage.

It's like if a company changed their return policy on one specific item in their stores, and posted it right next to the item: "THIS ITEM CANNOT BE RETURNED".

people buy the item and then scream for hours about how they want to return it, how could they possibly think to read the text posted RIGHT NEXT TO THE ITEM, theyve got kids dontcha know?! the store ALWAYS accepts returns, why not this one, come OOOON, theyve got like 5 of the item and they NEED to return it NOW.

I'm just offering suggestions on how they could have avoided the whole thing at this point. This isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened before across the genre with communication, and even outside the genre in real life this kind of thing is something people generally try to avoid happening.

In general if SE wanted to move away from the older strategy of having moogle tomestone events with rotating menus, the better option would be to phase out moogle tomestone events entirely for a new "event" with a new NPC specific to it. The old iterant moogle would eventually just be phased out entirely and vanish from the major city hubs and no one would really care. After all, the main communication that people have with the company is through the gameplay and what is actively there in the game.

Also, this same thing happened in WoW all over the place. There were quests that literally had clues in the text that said how to complete them, but people didn't read the quest text because people depended on just using the quest markers (This is well after Wrath of the Lich King days where people actually did read the text on the quests). People would complain about how the quest seemed unusually difficult on the forums. Why? Because they didn't read the quest text. Now in WoWs case the quest text is a giant word blob on a parchment background with a static npc just staring blankly at you, so it kind of makes sense after doing the 1000th go fetch me something quest you'd ignore it.

So the truth is people are in the right that the stuff shouldn't have been taken down and they should stick with the grace period. It might not make a lot of sense to someone who does take the time to read the text from the lodestone, but this is real life where things demand our attention all over the place. We want to play the game we pay for, and unfortunately in the business of advertising and gaming we have only so many sentences worth of text that people will pay attention to.

No one has been arguing that a grace period similar to the normal tome events shouldn't have been done, though? Most people are stomping their feet and screaming about not knowing because of assumptions and not reading the event page. Rather than take the loss and move on, they're instead trying to blame SE for their own faults in the matter and making demands. That is what people take issue with; and that is what has been repeated ad nauseum for pages on pages by most of us, because - again - people aren't reading.

It is solely on the fault of the user for not paying attention and reading through event notices. No company in the real world can be held accountable for someone simply not doing something. They could have a sign directly in their face at all times about it, and someone still wouldn't read. Just admit to fault, move on, don't make assumptions next time. That's all most of us are saying to these people.

But it always falls on deaf ears because they don't take the time to fully read out responses, dislike someone disagreeing or pointing out their fault in the matter, and resort instead to just screaming more about it. At this point the same arguments and responses have played out dozens of times in this thread and it really serves no real purpose anymore.

Regardless, I'm moving back to lurk status in this thread. Not about to be drawn back into repeating myself and the words of others for another 5 pages, whether by you or others. (Thank you for at least being polite and having a discussion, though! It's appreciated.)
