They very heavily leaned into, "You didn't see his dead body, so he's not dead."

But yeah, we beat him in single combat and then hit him with the Spirit of Haldrath's Dragonfire Dive, direct hit and see him falling backwards. It's one of those situations where he was intended to be dead, akin to Foulques (whose dead body we never see, though we do see him fall off a cliff), but they just sorta gloss over it in Heavensward. In 1.0 it went much the same way, only Coerthas wasn't snowy, Estinien's skin was grey. There's no cutscene afterwards where Alberic muses on hoping Estinien is still out there, living.

The possession. The idea that Estinien stole the eye and was a fugitive. Alberic entirely. Oh well.

Sort of more on topic, I wonder how many baby lancers are confused by Foulques being able to use Ring of Thorns to create ice puddles in the level 30 Lancer fight. We haven't had Ring of Thorns in a long time.

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore

I think Estinien got spirited away by Nidhogg, rather than simply fleeing, but yeah. He didn't die there, just vanished for a while.

That whole plot did ideally need some tweaking as of Heavensward, though – mostly the thing with us somehow manifesting as the legendary Haldrath. But it also would have been better post-questline if Alberic said afterwards that Estinien had reappeared and seemed recovered from Nidhogg's possession, rather than that he was missing, since Aymeric was able to call on him just fine.

Why would they be confused? Enemies use skills we don't have all the time, and he's clearly been learning the art longer and knows more skills than we do.

If anything, a new player is less likely to know it was something that the class once had access to.
