Not greying out nameplates at proper range

Hi, I'm new to the game and I've spent nearly all day trying to figure out some kinks in my UI

And even though I've searched everywhere I can't find anything relating to nameplates getting greyed out when people are too far.

As a healer I rely on this quite a lot so I know who I can heal and who I can't, but playing as a scholar in frontlines, my highest range spell is 30y but it's only greying out nameplates after 40-50y and I can't figure out why or how to change it.

Because of this, I end up trying to heal people who aren't in range because I think they are and I stand there like an idiot doing nothing.

Please help, this is super frustrating

Not sure that's an option in-game.

After awhile you will just get better at gauging how far away people are especially considering the fact all single target heals are 30y, AoE heals take a little bit more work.

The nameplates greying out refers to targeting distance, not spell/action ranges (because these vary wildly) so you cannot rely on the nameplates for what you're wanting to know.

If you want to know if your current target is in range of your action, look at the action's hotbar button instead. It'll have red text/outline if the target is out of range of that action; it'll be white if it is in range.

When it comes to untargeted or self-targeted actions though (usually AoE stuff like Succor or whatnot), you won't be able to rely on this method. This is just something you'll have to get a feel for with practice -- for instance, once you start taking notice of that stray BLM who always stands miles away from the rest of the party and doesn't get your AoE heals, and you swear he's doing it on purpose, and you start noticing your mounting frustration... that's about when you've got it.

The MP cost of the spell will be in red if you can't target them with it. That's a far more reliable indicator.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it.

This is really really disappointing though. "Just gauging the distance" isn't really helpful.. because there's not really any way to do that.. I rely on the in-game tools to do that and the greying of nameplates is staple for doing so.

As for red text on manacost, I am aware of this but the problem is that when there are 24 people all running around going in and out of range constantly, I don't have time to click on each individual and check their range while health bars are flying up and down and people are dying very quickly.

Lastly, if no one relies on the greying of nameplates, why is it even in the game? Why does it even happen? What's the point of putting that in the game if it doesn't have any purpose other than to confuse people like me who've gotten used to that function from other MMOs? :/

    Thanks

It's there to show you who is in targetable range (as in, you can click them) . Aka, if people are lagging behind so you don't pull the atomos mid bosses and have everyone end up with A causing a wipe.

With spells having different ranges, a singular identifier to target range doesn't work.

It's just a general idea of when people are close. Nothing more.

And really, in a 24 man alliance, you shouldn't be worrying about people in other parties unless their healers are dead. Each party gets 2 healers.
