Dumb controller issues

This has probably come up a number of times but a google search isn't helping me any.

I have a PS4 controller I'm trying to use on my PC.

Touchpad doesn't work. At all. Pressing it does nothing either.

Square is doing triangle's actions, triangle is doing nothing.

I can't get the extended cross hotbars figured out either.

This is driving me nuts. Halp. Wired, config is set to XOST + touchpad PS4. Trying to figure out the controls isn't exactly easy when the controls aren't helping.

I found out the square/triangle thing when I tried to calibrate the controller and square was mapped to triangle and triangle doesn't register. I can't change it either, it appears to be set correctly in everything I'm seeing. Square is supposed to open the map. It makes me jump T.T

I didn't have much of a problem with a PS4 controller while playing on PC at least on a functional level, but keeping the usb cord intact was a challenge. When the usb cord wasn't worn out it was honestly just a matter of plugging it in and going about my business. Ended up switching to a wired Xbox controller (mostly off brands) for PC play and it worked so much better for me.

I have a feeling this is just a configuration issue but it's got me completely stumped.

It should be pretty much plug in and play. You have mentioned you have calibrated it, but have you checked the Button Config? Just going with the easy things first.

If that is all fine, do you have any other applications running that could interfere with anything? If you are running the steam version, you might need to check in the steam controller settings as something might be wrong there (I don't use the Steam version, so I am just guessing here). There is also a third party program called DS4windows that is commonly used to allow a PC to properly see a DS4 controller for programs that don't natively support DS4.

Other than that, I don't really know. Like Vahlnir said, I just plugged in and played.

Not the steam version. I checked button config, that's how I know what they're supposed to do.

I expected plug and play, i mean it works for MH:W(which was why I bought the thing) but 14 it just isn't working right.

I wish I knew what the issue was, but clearly something isn't right somewhere.

Going to see if the problem is my USB port. I'm hearing PS4 controllers can have issues with USB 3.0 ports. I'll get back on that.

Dualshock4s aren't 100% plug and play on PC. Steam has what's needed to interface with a DS4 so Steam games will generally work, but most games outside of Steam will require special software for it, such as DS4Windows. Generally, the way these things work is by tricking the computer into thinking you're using an Xbox controller, which is why when I look into my controller settings in FF14, it shows me Xbox controller button layouts (I also use a DS4)

So i think I figured out everything but the touchpad, which i really don't care if it works.

I swapped to a USB 2.0 port on the back of my PC. I waited for windows to recognize it, loaded the game. Set the controller layout to PS4 and recalibrated. Triangle functions again.

I swapped jump and map and those both work. Now i need to figure out the extended cross hotbars. And how to get the stupid menu buttons off them. If i need to see my mount list i still have my keyboard and mouse. Lol.

The USB port on the DualShock 4 controllers was primarily designed to charge the device and not to provide connectivity. It wears out rather quickly. If you want to use the controller on a PC I recommend trying to find the "DualShock 4 USB Wireless Adaptor". Unfortunately it has been discontinued outside of Japan for quite some time so you might need to use ebay, et, also it's not exactly cheap. The game supports this adapter directly, no need to fiddle with DX4Windows, etc-
