They're optional consumables in optional content.

So is food, but people will likely be displeased by people not fooding in appropriate content, and the impact food has on our DPS doesn't even begin to compare to the impact essences have.
bruh... you don't need 100mil+ to buy essences... no one is asking you to sell your house... we're asking to spend either a few minutes or a few pennies to save a lot of time for 24 people lmfaoAhaha yeah lemme just sell my large house to benefit 20 randoms.. hmm no? I worked for the gil and the house. You put no value in what a house can give to someone, but a house can be a centre for a community, for many it is the whole reason that keeps them subbed.
Which is the most incredibly egotistical, expecting a total stranger to give up something important to them which they enjoy for YOU or letting them enjoy a game and you mind your own business? HMMMM hard choice that one.
Also as soon as you get matched with them, the way you play affects them and therefore becomes their business as well.

This isn't a good argument. ONE PERSON in the run using an essence doesn't "save a lot of time." You people keep taking the difference between EVERYONE using an essence and NO ONE using an essence, then applying it to a situation where ONE PERSON is saying they aren't using essences.
Me popping an essence isn't the difference between a 45 minute run and a 20 minute run, it's the difference between a 45 minute run and maybe a 43 minute run. It's not going to make a difference that anyone in the run will really care about, but the time I spend farming or the gil I spend on the market board will make a difference to me.

So, instead of severely hurting 23 other people, like in your fantasy scenario, what I'm actually doing is being like .01% of a large scale problem that's completely beyond my ability to fix anyways...
Yea, I'm fine with that. If you want to throw your time and gil into a bottomless pit in order to pay lip-service to a problem that's WAY beyond your scope then have fun, but don't try to force that onto everyone.
