I don't like Clemency because it makes SCHs cry.
Please, be nice to your SCH, they've got it rough as it is.

Jokes aside, I don't like seeing it cast even if the healer is bad. I'm of the mindset that using it to make up for a bad healer gives said healer a pass, allowing them to squeeze by in content they're not ready to heal. So instead of them being held back and forced to learn how to play their role or get more appropriate gear they continue to slide by up to level 80, where they continue to do things like not dps, cure bot, or spam Cure I because they were never forced to learn to play. I'm seeing an increasingly large number of players asking their tanks at level 80 to use Clemency in level 80 content, and that shouldn't be happening.

I think it's fine if it's a new player or someone learning the ropes of their class provided you're trying to help teach them while casting the Clemency. But all too often I see people just silently using it and letting sub-par healers eke on by without any challenges whatsoever.

If a healer is new or is trying and open to advice but failing, use it and try to help them. If a healer is letting people die but doing little/nothing to remedy the situation or is belligerent to advice, kick them and get a new healer. Don't let people use Clemency as a crutch.

The use cases for Clemency are so narrow that you should never think to use it in normal content, outside of soloing.

It IS marginally used in HIGHLY OPTIMIZED Savage Content. IE: It is more DPS-efficient for the Paladin to use one Clemency over a GCD heal of specifically an Astro or a Scholar, but not a white mage because using a Lily is DPS neutral (or DPS positive if blood lily hits the almighty crit).

Otherwise, just stuff it on your Cross Hotbar to use if the healer dies in dungeons or something. Clemency is never optimal unless stuff is already going down the toilet.

I'll whip out clemency and hit anybody below half if I see a healer HARDCASTING revive. If I can healer gets a cover too.
That's my sign that things have gone over the line, and it's time to sacrifice DPS for survivability.

    ....

I'm also bad enough at the game that I'll clemancy myself if I get scared at 25%.

(The first is probably right, the second probably isn't)

I main whm and personally, if the pld wants to use it, go ahead.

I am not going to lay awake at night worried about it. they can play how they want and generally, the way I heal, if the pld thinks they need to use it, its likely because things are sliding south and people are soaking in the deep end of an aoe. I am sure I dont speak for all healers, and definitely not the ones that get bent over this, but in my book, if its not a wipe, its a good run whether the pld used clemency or not.

I generally only use it when things have gone south. Like the healer(s) are dead etc. Or if I'm soloing, or doing something where I don't trust the healers like if I'm doing a bozja ce or something and the healers don't seem on the ball.

It's a useful backup for when things aren't going according to plan, or when soloing. But if you have healers who know what they're doing, you shouldn't need to hit it unless things take a turn for the worse.

I routinely tank and heal and this is a good answer.

If I'm on PLD and I mass pull and the healer is struggling? You bet your @$$ I'm going to use Clemency. A dead tank is a dead party.

My Healer derps and dies on a boss with no RDM/SMN to get them up? I've saved Multiple runs with good time Clemencies.

When I'm on WHM and I see a tank Clemency-ing? More Holy Spam for me! Holy does more damage than tanks AoE in general anyway.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

If I see a paladin panic-clemency before my excogitation even has a chance to activate I will actually eat my own book.

Trust in your healer and a lack of communication (in pugs atleast) is typically a common trait with this subject. You got a Tank who takes a big whap and freaks out not noticing his healer has planned for it and is winding up a fat heal. But then another instance you'll have a healer who for whatever reasons can't cover you in time and you end up dying.

As both a solo healer and solo tank you have to ensure you're doing your best to keep the group alive while also trusting the others are on the same page despite them being random people you've never played with. This also assumes everyone is playing decently. Look we can't explain why sometimes a PLD just wants to spam Clemency at 90% HP, The Healer one button dps' during a tank buster, or why the BLM and DRG are sharing a spot on the AoE, It happens.

I've had times where I thought about Clemency, didn't, died, and then times where I did it and wasted my healer's spells. The only time this isn't a real problem is in groups with friends over discord with plenty of communication and trust. That's the only environment you can confidently have rules of engagements for your Clemency. Pugs? Just do it when you think it's needed and if the healer get's triggered then that's them.
