    Go to System Configuration, then Other, adjust Character and Object Quantity to Minimum. Hold click and adjust the camera so you can click it properly.
    You could also adjust the nameplates of players to display as initials in Character Configuration, Display Name Settings.

    I have name plates set to off for everyone but party and friends. I'm on pc with a controller and I have very little trouble selecting npc's.
