Eh, The class has only been largely reworked twice in like 3 expansion launches. As I don't recall it getting huge changes in Stormblood... They'll be fine...
But in all seriousness, they could give AST's current role to a new healer, in this case Chemist, as they try to figure out what the heck they exactly want to do with AST.
But as for weaponry, looking at the games the job as appeared in the past, 5, Tactics, X-2 and Bravely Default. With some mention also to X (with Mix as Rikku's overdrive) and Bravely Second (as Patissier being the game's equivalent of Salve-Maker)... The weapons they've mostly used a dagger (single, not dual wielding since that's usually a Ninja thing) or a gun...
Apparently not. Personally I feel they should have just removed the Sects in Stormblood (since they had always been the source of why AST couldn't be balanced properly) and then they wouldn't have had to do so much work now.
Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]
I'm still hanging on to Chemist being fused with Cannoneer as a ranged support. Hand cannon and a mudra-like Mix command for assorted buffs. It combines Tactics' main thing of it throwing items and using guns with TA2's Flintlock/Cannoneer's hand-cannons and ether shells/buff shots. Prime the cannon pre-battle or like DNC's steps every so often you sacrifice a couple of GCDs to Mix and Prime your next buff, with a Standard/Technical Finish-like burst when you're done.
For another predecent: X-2 had the Alchemist pull a free items out of their Stash with a long cast time, and they also used big guns.
Wasn't it mentioned somewhere that Sage was actually taking the spot of Chemist but with its own unique identity?
I don't want to see the sects removed. They are part of the astrologian's core identity.
If there is going to be a rework, I'd like a new job mechanic which requires the player to switch back and forth between the two sects. Call it the Balance of Libra or something like that.
'eh.
I don't remember anyone being all that put out when it was revealed dancer was going to be a damage dealer. Same as when samurai were revealed they were going to be a damage dealer instead of a tank. No one really complained.
However, I do think people will be annoyed if it was revealed chemist are going to yet another damage dealer. I mean, why? What's the point?
We don't need any more damage dealers. Nor do we need any more tanks or healers.
The only place in FFXIV for chemists, geomancers, and the other classes from prior FF games are as limited jobs.
In spite of all the distaste people have expressed about limited jobs on the forums, I personally feel there is a lot fertile ground here. But, Square Enix would need to step up in their efforts to make it work.
There would need to be enough content for those classes to enjoy and the limited jobs would need to stay true to their identity. No more butchering a job in the name of game balance! Let the limited jobs shine in there own place in FFXIV and leave the class balance to the non-limited jobs.

I think Chemist from FFX-2 is the path I would love to see a job like that go. Throw potions as your primary means of healing, use mix to combine different potions to get different effects whether it be healing or damage. We need an actual gun healer so that we have a gun user in every role.
Alchemist and Dancer were good opportunities for them to try out non-magical healers. Its a shame they are stuck with that mindset and won't try out a healer with some meaningful gameplay differences.
Don't have a horse in this race.., but more towards that they'll like find something else.
<Kinda wish they had three Healer Types.., Pure/Shield/Hybrid-etc.>
Chemist always had a Phys, and Damage Support angle from my view.., so as you can infer..,
With the chance that they'd have specialized equipment to aid/heal/damage from afar.., as broad as that field is..,<seeing as garleans had a darker weapon>
It might even fit PhysRanged..,
or like others said, variable healer..,
in the end though.., will have to see..,
But like I have no horse in this race..,
My Hope on it existing or not.., is low.(if I was hoping.)
