The fact they struggled so much because they couldn't reconcile Chemist with BEING a caster, because Healers HAVE to be Casters, is pretty telling that they really don't understand how to make healers engaging.
Alchemist was never on the table....that was just Fan prediction.
They were going to. They struggled to come up with a weapon concept for it, and then the actual design of the class. They weren't sure how to make it use both magic and potions. They just lacked inspiration for its design and moved on from it.
It's from this interview
“We were really having to rack our brains on the Sage idea,” Yoshida explains. “Of course there were ideas about, like, ‘Oh, bring over Alchemist,’ and things like that and when we thought about, ‘Okay, so what if we used Alchemist? What kind of weapon would they wield?’”
Initial ideas involved some kind of medical kit, but Yoshida says having such a science-based weapon for a magic-wielder “would be weird.” The developers also thought having a class that throws potions at people was “very difficult” to fit into the battle systems.
I was a little surprised to hear that they dropped Chemist/Apothecary because they couldn't nail down a weapon or theme for it.
Here you go: Magic Cannon that converts your body's aether into healing energy, and you can put alchemical ingredients in it to enhance the effect. Done.
Makes sense for a mage, works with the theme of a medicine-user, and it's already supported by existing lore (the machinist lunchbox converts your own aether into electricity to power your robots, plus there's the aether bazooka that gatherers use in Diadem).
It sounds to me like they didn't even try and basically just ended up getting distracted by the idea for Sage once they thought of the idea of flying weapons you control with your mind. Sadly I kind of doubt they'll ever add another healer and even if they do, it's many many years away now.
In that setting pretty much everyone want to become the WoL/D, to rebuild their ruined world, saying she wants to be such doesn't really mean anything special in that context. Also every shop has potions, alchemist can make them. It doesn't really sound interesting to just toss potions at ppl, when i already have some in my inventory. Are Chemists supposed to toss out infinite supply of Mega Elixirs, and fast cast phoenix down, to res ppl?I disagree that it's a leaps of logic. We knew a new healer is coming, then in msq emwe got an npc who specifically wants to be the WoL, but by healing people with potion. If they just want to hint in new healer, why specify the potion?
I love sage, but I don't want them to give up on chemist either.
Why would they be able to do that for free, when alchemist need materials to manually Craft them?
ppl want it to NOT be a magic healer though.I was a little surprised to hear that they dropped Chemist/Apothecary because they couldn't nail down a weapon or theme for it.

We predicted Chemist based upon a main story quest in which we help a little girl on the First start studying under the lead of the hospital area in the Chrystariam. She described an adventurer that saved her life with an incredible potion, and all the details she described matched the legacy designs of chemist. The game dangled it right in front of our faces.
I wasn’t aware they had art block on the weaponry. It’s been all over the place ranging from daggers to claws to handguns.
I remember these quests, and I can't say the thought of potential "Chemist" ever crossed my mind. Combat medics would naturally exist without needing to be an actual fleshed out player job. As far as dropping hints goes, geomancer still seems like the most obvious and disappointing. We predicted Chemist based upon a main story quest in which we help a little girl on the First start studying under the lead of the hospital area in the Chrystariam. I wouldn't be totally against the idea of Chemist. It should work. But I also imagine as long as healers are classed as Disciple of Magic, you're stuck with magic-themed healers. In truth, it shouldn't make a difference. "Mind" as a stat should still work just fine.
I've said this in several threads before, so apologies if you've seen this:
The patch around the Heroes' Gauntlet also included several quests in the Crystalarium.
In there, the bosses added were specifically "Berserker", "Thief" and "Necromancer". The quests in town included a girl who wanted to become a sort of combat "Chemist/Churgeon" (Sorry, I forget which was specifically named).
I'm of the belief these were specifically to say these will not be added in as player jobs despite players constantly wanting them. As in, Yoshi-P can joke "Players requested we add Thief to the game, so we did!"
In theory a sciency healer job would be neat but I don't expect it to happen. They're still going to use mp, still going to have cast bars, still going to be disciple of magic. For better or worse the game has certain boxes in its design they're not likely to step outside of.
I'll honestly be surprised if we even get a fifth healer at all, at least before like 10.0. I don't think two jobs per expansion is something that's going to continue to happen every time in general.
I don't think it was as Meta as that, just them having fun making alternate sorts of WOLs from other shards to have us fight, things that werne't one to one to in game jobs.I've said this in several threads before, so apologies if you've seen this:

For the 'chemist' angle I never got why people thought that was hinting at a job, especially when we were wrapping things up on the first and new jobs aren't likely to be tied to the First going forward.
