It's also the case in Final Fantasy Tactics.

Ramza survives the events of the game, though his demise is faked and it isn't until much later in Ivalice's history that the truth surrounding his actions is revealed to the world. I think it'd be pretty disappointing if Gabranth was indeed killed off screen but I'm reluctant to take that at face value just yet. We've already had the Return to Ivalice story carry over into Save the Queen so there's already a precedent for the story to be picked up again in the upcoming expansion. There's still arguably a lot of FFXIV's version of Ivalice to tap into, after all.

If Gabranth was just going to be killed off, there was ample opportunity to do it during the confrontation aboard the Dalriada. His counterpart in FFXII is also one of the more popular and memorable characters in the story, being a key player in the defeat of Vayne and Venat. I'd be very surprised if nothing was done with him, given FFXIV's history of fanservice.

Ultimately, it's likely written to be open ended to account for Matsuno being a guest writer. If he's invited to continue serving in such a capacity in the future, the plot point can be picked up again. If not, it leaves things open to speculation as to what truly went down.

SPOILER for Save the Queen ending!!!!! You are WARNED!

Gabranth and Lyon are not killed off in the end as they are kept alive with a huge cliffhanger for the story to be continued in next expansion or a future expansion so the FFT/FFXII story of FF14 will continue. The choices made in this does affect certain aspect of the ending though as a certain person will live or die in the ending based on your choices.

Though I don't know where will SE take the storyline after Save the Queen if they continue it in 6.X era. The only hints we have is that Gabranth is collecting a certain set of weapons from the Allagan Ruins and it seems his main goal was always to obtain these weapons above everything else.

In hindsight, it does seem rather possible Gabranth's "death" was staged but even if it was, with the IVth legion basically dissolved and a terminal illness catching up with him it seems unlikely he'll be able accomplish much of anything...though if those allagan relics he discovered are of them same sort as Save the Queen and Zantestsuken, I suppose some new issues could come up as a result of that.
I honestly don't see him being killed off screen since as of now SE developers are basically creating a entire separate storyline for FF14 that is almost on the scale of the MSQ with the FFT/FFXII storyline covering multiple expansions. What we see in the ending is a very big hint SE may have a long term goal for the FFT/FFXII storyline
