The problem with a karma system is that it promotes an echo chamber of parroting ideas, while suppressing dissenting one. The whole spirit of a forum is to have different point of views and discuss them, and communities like Reddit can end up being fairly closed minded when proposing anything that escapes the norm to them.

These forums are more of an Instagram system. No dislike negativity but you still get to enjoy likes and in turn like others. While I do think a karma system might bring in more positive content (even if it's just karma farming) not worrying about getting downvoted to oblivion is nice.

Not point of OP but wanted to say definitely no to a downvote system. It will absolutely get used to promote an echo chamber, and at least given a situation thinking outside of 'yourself' (self-aware is more difficult to do consistently) I think everyone can agree people hivemind and then that becomes scary as well as often hiveminds can absolutely be wrong. To the point of hiding actual information because of a group of people keep passing around false information or controlling the narrative, made worse since when you post you might or might not get an accurate representation of the situation (maybe one time you post and a group of people who hate your idea hide it, but on an average day the majority would have liked it- it's like the magic of posting your content at the right to time activate the windfall of interactions). Absolutely no to a reddit like system, it makes echo chambers every time all the time - which is good if you're dedicated around kittens or something and people have that mindset, but obviously can go poorly. Often you'll see reddits with an unspoken rule of acceptable utterance and conduct that is enforced by the majority, no thanks when trying to foster a community of sharing feedback.

Plus I trust SE more to read what people are interested and approach that more logically than players determining what SE can or cannot see, which is why I'm fairly outspoken when I see people try to shut down conversations for perceived reasons ("can't do this because of this one story element or accounting financial reason, etc", I feel is counter to the point of the forum), SE knows if they can't do something because of their own story, financial means, or what have you, what they don't know as easily is what and why people want stuff (desires and feedback)- even if they wont do exactly what a player wants they would gain far more useful information if you had just let the player explain and share their desires over silencing the conversation.

As for the forum I think our current system is fine, although I wonder what would change if even the likes were hidden (from us, not the devs of course). I feel some people use likes as a way to actually read content, if something has likes it has a chance to get more likes, which may draw attention to something they would otherwise not read.. which may be a good thing.. but at the same time that means people might be skipping something they would have actually agreed with simply because they didn't get the right 'windfall' at that time. Some starting the like storm.

In the end it doesn't matter tho because they've already got their 10k+ upvotes or whatever.

Edit: Also, I hate how people abuse the downvote on Reddit.
People downvote others for very simple disagreements or out of spite, it creates echo chambers and makes people scared of having opinions.
It doesn't even need to be a controversial opinion.

I generally hate how people behave around art on Reddit in general people are insanely rude especially when it's anything that could possibly be seen as even mildly suggestive and is a female character.
Even on the FFXIV subreddit there's a lot of unnecessary rudeness towards people which is especially bad since the art is usually peoples OC's they've commissioned art of.
But then in the comments it's always people who have to complain because there's *gasp* cleavage or whatever EVERY chance they get.
If you speak up at all about that you get dogpiled with downvotes because they're super dedicated, the art can be 99% upvoted but the comments can be super negative with dedicated haters.

I dunno why but Reddit is just especially bad, I actually think that Twitter is less toxic and that's saying a lot.

I kinda fail to see how that's different tbh.
I think that simply having a like system is fine, generally it gets the same point across but without the people just abusing downvotes/ not useful out of spite or for simple disagreements.

With that said maybe special commendations would be okay too.
But I think that as soon as you add a negative thing it very easily just turn into the same thing.
Make the helpful or not helpful thing unique per post not as a whole thing that follows the user around the site. It’s basically what Amazon reviews do. Either way I don’t see what any sort of Karma system would add to this site in all honesty.

Reddit is a s-hole with herd mentality community. Disagree with the herd and get downvoted to hell. Up/downvote system is a bad system and only promotes mentality like that

I've actually complained about Reddit before on the forums. I can't even post on the main FFXIV Reddit, because I have too many downvotes from a different subreddit - I got downvoted to oblivion for asking if I could refund a game. I wasn't really an avid user of Reddit at the time, so I contacted the mainsub's mod's and they told me to go farm upvotes, or "karma", whatever it's called somewhere else, and come back.

Needless to say, I haven't used Reddit since.

Yeah I have no clue why Reddit is so popular. I guess it's because it makes people feel good about themselves because it seems everyone agrees with them

People don't like dissenting opinions; being told their wrong. Same reason many yell "troll" if someone has an opinion they don't like. Having tons of upvotes on Reddit probably makes some feel like they have some sort of 'status', It's addictive. Many people aren't necessarily looking for actual discussion, just those things to reinforce their own opinions as fact.

WoW's forums used to have a like/dislike system that had dislikes removed as they fostered echo chambers and abuse. Even their post flagging system is used abusively, to bury stuff they don't agree with rather than truly offensive or rulebreaking content.

We don't need that type of thing. Thanks, but no thanks.
