A lot, because those people have a point. I'll take the forest in shadowbringer as an example, you arrive there and they just dump tons of lore on you that's never really used or mentioned in an important way, Also you have 2 quests that you actually need to go out and kill stuff, then you got the zone dungeon and that the whole zone for you. There is almost no player interaction and the zone just feel like a bad lore dump that could be avoided. And on the Other side, we got Emet in the same xpac giving you some bit of lore from time to time but never too much, he makes you want to progress into the story to know more, over telling you his whole backstory 3 minutes after meeting you for the first time.
The game also suffers from the fact they kinda hidden 1.0 lore away and that becomes an issue later. Gaius in 2.0 is written as a classic BBEG and his personality swift in SB just looks like an ass-pull, when in fact he was shown to be like that in 1.0.
IMO is not that the story is bad, it just that it can't focus at the time due to how many characters and factions they put in, so the world doesn't feel real about what happens in front of you. The storytelling often shifts from good to bad so it just feel like tons of down and up. But again, the lack of focus on characther just ruin it for me, I can't care for char that are ignored for 3 xpac just for them to pretend they existed or had a personality later on.
What possesses someone to necro a thread several months old?
Here is an example of Im right entitled and a narcissist. You basically told this guy he is completely wrong by saying one of his Favorite games is bad. Hmmmmm The Hypocrisy is amazing in ff fans these days. The fact you decided to say the last of us 2 was good completely made your point invalid.
If you didn't feel anything from this games story I'd suggest you quit now and move back to those single player games you praise so much. Since it sounds like a MMO is notvyour Cup of tea
But Im only in the forums for entertainment and you single handedly entertained me with your hypocrisy.
Randomly necromancing threads and hoping no one notices the dates, are we? This is familiar. Here is an example of Im right entitled and a narcissist. You basically told this guy he is completely wrong by saying one of his Favorite games is bad. Hmmmmm The Hypocrisy is amazing in ff fans these days.

LOL what...Last of Us 2 was HORRIBLE writing that literally took a giant sh*t on the characters that Last of us established making them act out of character and pushed too hard to make you like the new group and hate the old one. It looked the team that wrote Last of Us wrote something some high schooler wrote and decided that would make a good story for a sequel and ran with it. Also yes you are hero of light, but not EVERY SECOND of EVERY DAY will you be dealing with world ending disasters sometimes it will just be helping regular people as a hero, gather the herbs they need, help them with their chores, repairing a fence that broke so on, it makes it more immersive and more realistic as not everything is world ending sometimes being a hero to someone is helping them when they need assistance in something in their day to day. life.I played a lot of other Final Fantasy's and a lot of gaming sites say that FF14 has one of the best stories in the franchise so I tried it out. This is an issue of the hype killing the game. FF14 has a good story but it's not as good as the hype makes it out to be so in the end I was disappointed. I can give you 50 games that had a better story than FF14.
The first issue is that there is too much filler in the story that adds next to nothing to the lore or the story. Having to play hide and seek with children is not interesting. Having to harvest vegetables as the freaking Warrior of Light is stupid. The game suffers from being an MMO by having to give you way too much filler.
The second issue is that the game can't be as immersive as modern story-driven games. The Last of Us 2 is capable of making you feel sad, angry, and horrified because the game is designed in a very immersive manner. FF14 makes you read the dialogues which isn't as immersive as modern story games.
The third issue is that even in world-ending, cataclysmic events, there is no sense of urgency. This is partially because FF14 isn't as immersive as single player games. It's also because there are way too many Mary Sue moments in the game where you expect someone to die but they miraculously survive. After a few Mary Sue moments you just don't expect anyone to die anymore. Because of that there is not much tension to be felt in the story.
I'm not saying the story is bad, but it's definitely not one of the best stories in a video game nor is it really even one of the better stories among the Final Fantasy franchise. I enjoyed FF14 and it does have a better story than WoW but I don't think it matches up to actual single player games at all. So I really don't get the hype and IMO people have just not played enough thought-provoking story games outside of FF14. Saying it has one of the best stories in video gaming history is an exaggeration at best.
Im so happy somebody else besides me finally said it about the entirety of FFXIV's story. It has always been so jarring to me how high of a standard they hold the whole msq when its just above average at best compared to many jrpgs. Its indeed very cool and immersive to have your own avatar be integrated into the main story and have somewhat setup relationships with various characters that you can get yourself attached but thats prolly its biggest strength for why the story worked so well with many people. But to me it never was because of they handled the pacing and narrative, it was just all a feel good story in an MMO.
Single player rpgs still hold the stronger stories just due to how the game and narrative flows better in those experiences compared to an MMO. And I will forever stand behind this being the case.
I have lost so many friends, so many people, so many potential friends, because I'm one of those who just don't like the story and saying that will always give you a black check on your name, and people will consider you a troll, a hater, someone who doesn't like jrpgs, and as someone who absolutely loves jrpgs since they were a child I always suffer hearing that. Because having a different opinion is not allowed and this left me alone, distrustful of everyone because knowing that all I needed to cause major ripples within my friends and I, was to simply say "I don't like the story".
I wish more people would respect my opinion for disliking the story as I respect theirs for liking it. But that doesn't exist in today's era: you're either a troll/hater for disliking something others like, or a complete fanatic who has to acknowledge everything, even the flaws.
Just had to let this out and since I'm quitting the game soon so it won't matter if people will search me out ingame to tell me I'm a horrible person: I will be gone elsewhere and hopefully for good.
Edit: had no idea this was a 2 year old thread, but I guess it's a good timing since I'm leaving. I take it as a sign to finally move on.
Edit 2: just to clarify, I'm only quitting the game, the dramatic tone wasn't intended: leave the poor gamer some slack for letting out something they kept for ten years, will you?
