100% OP. Here is a list of all mmos with a better story then ff14, and arguably do everything that ff14 does but slightly better in some regards.

    1) Swtor: Actually hard end game content, which relies on doing bosses actively instead of remembering patterns
    2) Blade and Soul: based on a book sold millions. Best wushu story to this date. Best pvp in mmo history
    3) ESO: story is not about always being hero, you can be bad [Thieves guild, Dark brotherhood etc]
    4) BDO: story through world building and ghost: best life skills systems
    5) Elsword: Best hardcore pvp you will find
    6) GW2: best story I have played in path of fire: best envio exploration
    7) AQ3D: funny puns and humour: still let’s you be evil, unlike ff14

Many others. Ff14 heavenward really was not that good, I am sorry. And people say it’s the best expansion. The story was boring. Corny, childish. Not believable, the MC did not react like me always running away like a coward, I had the same issue with SB so far. To many Dey’s ex machina for us surviving or us killing enemies. The hero, be a good guy is old, no one wants it anymore.

    - biggest issue I had: why we running, I can just end these people here on the spot. Made any moment that was supposed to be emotional, worthless because come on…. Hit them with a fireball /sword, they are dead lmao

Says the story is childish, and proceeds saying that you need to be a bad guy for a story to be good. LMAO. I'm sorry but that's the most childish corny twist you could possibly get in a story. (not to mention that there is not really good and evil in XIV story, everything is grey, every villain is somewhat redeemable, and the scions are doing what they think is right, just like the villains)

It could use less plot holes and more enforced stakes. Outside of that, the story has been consistently fine.

While I will admit, the story can sometimes be all over the place, especially in ARR, Shadowbringers has been, for me, the best expansion story wise (as well as music wise, LA HEE notwithstanding). It's hard to talk about without spoilers but it felt like a solid kick in the crotch in some parts.

I don't play other games, but pray forgive me to counter about Blade and Soul having the best story. Best wushu story, maybe, but best story? I don't think so.

Story of BnS goes like this:
-You are Cricket, have a lovely place to train under Hongmoon School under the famous Master Hong.
-You get to known a few of your brothers and sisters for like 5 minutes, then they get killed on the next cutscene by intruders for cheap drama.

-Even though poisoned by a traitor, your Master goes Super Saiyan and is about to just get rid all of the intruders himself, but then hostage situation comes, in which the hostage is you. So yeah, he held back, got killed. You throw some cheap anger at the killer, and got throw off the cliff (wushu stories loves throwing people off the lifts some reasons)
-You go on a journey to gather allies, hone your skills. You got a curse from your killer that keeps eating your life force and prevent you to be any helpful in timee of need. Then when the day comes, all of your efforts are useless. Then there is this guy who called Mushin whispering you to follow the Dark Art for more powah. You came with him.

-After some introduction with Dark Art school, you come for another journey to gather more allies. While you're still a disciple of Dark Art, you basically just be an errand boy/girl for people to ask favor again. Nothing changes at all. This part is heavily changed compared to before: you used to have two story lines Light and Dark with vastly different ending. But China law doesn't allow evil protagonist, and China is a too big of a market to be ignored, and it is a hassle to divide player bases further, so NCSoft just gutted/streamlined the story into a single one.
-You faced your killer again. Still be a useless Cricket. You survived, in a near-death state, and was about just passing off till some of your allies (The Eight Masters or something. Sound cool, but never interact with you much), who barely have any screen time, came and gave you their life force, then turning into a nice garden of statues. Their passing finally cleansed you that stupid curse.
-More journey. Turn out your killer was not super bad (well, she was a sorrowful-looking beauty, after all). She had a certain tragic past, and hated the world who wronged her so much that she preferred seeing it burn.

Part 1 of my rant because it becomes too long lol.

Part 2 of my rant, sorry if this bother whoever read this

-This time any ally you made before came for the decisive battle. This time, you could finally prevailed with cutscene power against your killer.
-You came back to rebuild your old home, become a Master of the School. Sending off your deceased brothers/sisters and master. You even got a bonus child as your very first disciple, who was former your killer that was given a chance of redemption.

-Time passes. You got more disciples. More friends, though a good number turned of them turned traitors. You were still a goody-two-shoes and kept got more and more backstabbers, who happened have tragic pasts. Oh, one of them used to be a good child. You are still useless in time of need, got your disciples killed left and right in cutscene incompetence. The game pretty much became predicting who are gonna to be your next traitor.

And for world building, Blade and Soul literally have zero now. It used to have some lore and interaction with the world through side quests (some very funny, like the parody of Oz with my favourite Lyn Dorothy, or very heart-breaking, like the story of a ghost girl keep waiting for her father's return), but our favourite developer NCSoft decided that those blue quests hinder players from moving to end-game where they will open more wallets more often, and decide to nuke every single blue quests of older areas, making them pretty but empty. Some characters in main quests used to appear in side quests, so without side quests, players have no clue who are they (Dorothy was kidnapped once in main quest, for example). And NCSoft didn't expect that some of blue quests were tied to some dungeons with outfit drops, so they accidentally nuked them too, until they decided to add the outfits to vendor later.

I used to think BnS story is good, until I manage to get rid of myself being addicted to that game and have a chance to play other games, including FF14. Compared to being a Master of Hongmoon School who is always useless when in time of need and keep seeing cheap feel-invoking drama, I prefer to be a Warrior of Light who can pull his own weight and the drama is used at the right time, and have friends who are sturdy enough to take care of their own instead of a bunch of kids and allies who are always in need of your protection.

Totally a meme between my friends who play this game with me.

"bets this guy will betray us?"
"no bet... last 12 people taught me a lesson"
    ".. yup."

    4 chapters later:

"WHY ARE WE ACTING SURPRISED THAT PERSON 234 IS BETRAYING US? THIS LITERALLY HAPPENS EVERY TIME!"

I'm not necessarily talking about FFXIV, but I've noticed a trend in general.

Nowadays people have much lower standards. They are more willing to give high ratings for less.

    It usually goes like this:
    > First game was really good and innovative, players loved it.
    > Seconds game did not live to the players' expectations, but overall, it was playable and ok.
    > Third game was terrible. Some players hated it, others loved it because they will love any game from this series.
    > Fourth game is better than the third, still not better than the second or the first game. The majority of the players will love it and give it high ratings. This is because they are comparing it to the third game which was terrible. Anything compared to the third game would seem good, even when it's not really that good.

Not necessarily in that order, but usually, any game that follows a disappointing/bad release is going to be seen as 'good'. As long as it's slightly better than the previous one.

This applies to games, movies, TV series, etc..
