Unavoidable death mechanics should not be a thing in FFXIV :(

My wife has earned herself quite the bragging rights over me but she should have been able to have even more bragging rights—but an unavoidable mechanic that targeted her killed her in The Orbonne Monastery. And there was absolutely nothing she could have done to avoid it

She was able to clear both The Royal City of Rabanastre AND Ridorana Lighthouse with no deaths on her first ever run of both. Something I cannot say that I did myself. It took me at least 20 runs to have a no deaths run The Royal City of Rabanastre and I have yet to have a no deaths run of Ridorana Lighthouse and I have done it at least a dozen times. My best on Ridorana Lighthouse was two deaths when I happened to be extremely focused the second half of the raid.

As for The Orbonne Monastery, one death and she got way further than I ever did without dying. The fact that she got past the first boss without dying means she already surpassed me.When she got passed the first boss without dying, I told her that if she can clear all three alliance raids with no deaths, I will go to the Sugar Bear in town here and buy her a dozen gourmet cupcakes because she loves cupcakes. These are not ordinary cupcakes, they are at least twice the size of a normal cupcake and a dozen is like $26.

What killed her? An unavoidable death mechanic during the swordman fight. As soon as I saw the attack target her, I was like "Oh no!" because it cannot be avoided and it kills you. I die when the attack hits me every single time. Because of this BS in the game, she lost out on cupcakes and I feel bad because there was absolutely nothing she could have done to prevent that death.

This attack follows you when you try to get out of it and continues to damage you until you are dead. I have never survived it and I have never seen anybody survive it.

It is a white beam that keeps hitting you. You might as well not run to get out of it, it follows you and keeps hitting you until you are dead. My wife even tried to pull a fast one by using sprint as soon as she first got hit with it (something that I never thought of doing) but the beams still followed her and was able to keep up with her even with sprint and they pounded her until she was dead.

I have seen this mechanic in other instances and raids; animation, colors, and visuals vary slightly but it does the same thing, pound you until you die

WHY have a mechanic that does this? You realize that if this targets someone who is the only person up, it is a wipe, don't you? What if this person was rezzing someone who could healer LB3?

Here is another example in my favorite alliance raid: World of Darkness

I was targeted for an attack, I had one of those purple markers over my head which means I am being targeted for attack, unavoidable as I am the target. that attacks deals 99999 damage. This is level 50 content so we only have a few thousand HP. It was unavoidable death and stuff like that should NOT be in the game

There are no kill mechanics in XIV. I suggest hitting up some youtube on specific raids if you have any questions about specific mechanics in any content.

Looked up a guide. Looks like she didn't react fast enough to keep out of the fast moving chasing AoE's and got killed. Happens to the best of us.

    It's not unavoidable.

Edit to add: You died in World of Darkness because you didn't find someone else to split the damage with. It only kills you if you don't stack with someone.

You could agree with your wife that it's BS, and then still buy her the cupcakes. Talk about posting your own L.

But yeah, like others said, it's not unavoidable. You can block the pulse from the beam by picking up the Heavenly Shield duty action when the shields spawn alongside the white beams. Divine Ruination is the attack name, and it's the only one that's like what you describe. Even if you didn't pick up a shield, unless you're undergeared severely, it only does like 40k damage. Unless she was stacked with everyone else with it.

Also, you know, I saw you playing in a Fatebreaker normal the other day. You played just fine, and you never died once. So, with certainty, you be trollin' I know you know what you're doing.

No, there are plenty of kill mechanics in the game. The game doesnt have any "unavoidable" kill mechanics, but plenty of things end you right away. Falling off the island in limitless blue? Dead. Didnt look away from Angra Manyu's gaze and didnt clear the resulting Doom debuff in time? Dead. There are plenty of fights with soft or hard enrages too, so the people who play too poorly to finish the fight in time? You guessed it, dead. But none of that is unavoidable. Dont yeet yourself off the edge, do the gaze or doom mechanic right, do enough damage to win - each instakill mechanic has a proper way to be done that ends in you not dying.

So when OP mentioned Orbonne i was curious which "death" mech they were going to incorrectly complain about. As they described on, i was guessing either Crush Weapon or Crush Armor. Then they mentioned the "white beam that keeps hitting you" and that narrows the move down to Crush Weapon. The description is a poor one - the attack is not a beam, its a giant sword slashing up from underground. And it doesnt "keep hitting you", it attacks 3 times period. But most importantly, its totally avoidable. TG Cid calls out the attack verbally, his cast bar shows the attack name, and the person(1 per group) to be targetted gets a marker over their head. THIS is your sign to move(and for the rest of your group to get out of the way), not the orange AoE circle appearing. You start running(no sprint needed) before the aoe appears, and it never catches up to you. No damage taken, no "unavoidable death".

Edit: I still interpret the description as being Cid's Crush Weapon. If Vyrerus is right and they actually meant Agrius's ruination that makes even less sense. That attack is both avoidable(do the shield mech/dont stack on the person targetted), and doesnt even deal lethal damage unless you have a few vuln stacks.

I was thinking Cid's Crush Weapon or possibly the tethers, which you're supposed to share.

The description of what the attack did is definitely Crush Weapon, but the only attack with a white beam is Divine Ruination(Shield break's tether is orange). Notice he didn't provide the actual boss name either. It's part of the hook.

There are no unavoidable death mechanics in FFXIV.
Some mechanics are difficult to avoid, and some require you to know and prepare for them in advance, but none that are unavoidable.
